walmart supertech synthetic?

I just changed my oil...I do 7500 mile oil change intervals with Mobil 1 synthetic and a purolator pure one filter. I saw Wal-Mart had this Supertech brand of synthetic oil. Anybody ever use it. I was tempted to buy it since it was so much cheaper than the M1, but wasn't sure.

Why would you consider, even for a second, cheaping out on a couple bucks on something as important as engine oil? Get the good stuff if you actually like your car.

I saw a test once online where they compared different filters and the walmart filter actually matched the Purolater Pure One filter (which is what I had been using on my vehicles exclusively before seeing that comparison. Of course, the Frams performed miserably.

I hate to say it, but the SuperTech stuff actually isn't bad. 220K miles on my strong running Jeep Wrangler with no smoke or oil consumption agrees with me.

I believe he's talking about the super tech oil...not the oil filter itself....we all know the oil filters perform great @ $2.50 a pop...but i always wondered about their synthetic oil line...

The supertech Synthetic oil is fine for 5k miles. It will perform just as good as M1 or any other brand. It will be fine for 5k and is better than dino oil.

hi, i have been using super tech 5w-30 synthetic in my car since I have gotten it with 69,000 and now I have 102,600 and have no probelms. If you look at the circle on the back of every engine oil container this oil has an sm rating. This is the same as mobile one or any of the other expensive synthetics. This circle is the api or ase oil rating. I think synthetic is synthetic. The only thing that might give more power is that new mobile one synthetic 0w-20. This is very light weight.

i use the purple syn and yota filter. the syn has really broken down the build up in the engine and the filter as far as i can tell is working great. i have 165,000.

Synthetics are simply not all the same. Different brands of synthetics vary significantly in base stocks used, additive packages, performance and service life.

The API standard you mention is a minimum performance standard that has been established by the industry. While the super tech oil you are using is labeled as meeting those minimum standards, so are the least expensive petroleum oils on the shelf. Manufacturers of premium lubricants can't claim their products meet a higher standard when none exists. Therefore, it's a false assumption to consider two oils, both labeled as meeting SM service classification, to be equal in quality and performance.

Well not all syn are the same. There are oils like Amsoil that have a lot of GrpIV and a good additive pkg which can take the oil to 10K and beyond. There are ois who will have a lot of GrpIV content but with a mediocre additive pkg. There are oils like M1 and PP that have a large content of GrpIII but a bullet proof additive pkg making them the choice of syn and they both rule the syn oils world in terms of volume. One should choose the syn oil based on the additive pkg and not GrpX content, the additive pkg is the one that is protecting the oil and engine.

In the case of SuperTech you will have GrpIII content with mediocre additive pkg and good to go for 5K miles, taking a UOA at 5K will give an indication how much more the oil can be stretched.

With PP/M1 one can confidently take the oil to 7500 miles OCI.

I'm not certain the SuperTech is Quaker State anymore. From what I've heard:

SUPERTECH SYNTHETIC = MAG 1 SYNTHETIC by WARREN DISTRIBUTION

Maybe someone could confirm. Don't know how that Warren stuff does on the tests though.

In fact, I've heard a number of different suppliers make the SuperTech stuff...like Exxon did at one point. It's possible there are a number of them. I've used the SuperTech ATF for awhile now and it seems to work fine.

SuperTech is a good bargain fluid -- no doubt about it as long as you keep OCIs under 5K miles. Actually I have heard only good things about it. They cut the marketing crap by selling it exclusively at Walmart.
