Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy

Hey crew, i was on the mobil website and i found this new oil:

Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy: is engineered to deliver outstanding engine protection and to offer improved fuel economy in vehicles where SAE 0W-30, 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil is recommended. This low friction, fully synthetic formulation increases engine efficiency and offers outstanding fuel economy. Over the life of your vehicle, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy can save over $400 in fuel costs.

says it can add 2% to your fuel economy.

anybody try it yet? I'm thinking about it, i use mobil1 full synth so figure why not try it out

Let's number crunch.

Say you get 400 miles out of a 20 gallon tank. That's 20 MPG. Now, ASSUMING that the 2% increase is somehow accurate, you're now getting 408 miles out of a tank. You're now getting 20.4 MPG.

Now, say you drive a standard 15k miles/year. At 20 MPG, that's 750 gallons @ $4.00/gal = $3000 in gas yearly.

At 20.4 MPG, that's about 735.3 gallons @ $4.00/gal = $2941.20 in gas yearly.

So, theoretically, by using this type of oil, you could save $58.80 a year in gas money.

Not bad, but it's a lot simpler to just drop the leadfoot habit.

I'd be concerned about the wear protection this oil provides....not because of the viscosity, but because of the formulation. Mobil 1 EP doesn't compete well against the competition in certain laboratory wear tests, and the EP is supposed to have 50% more additives of the regular M-1. The Advanced Fuel Economy oil falls under the Mobil-1 umbrella, with 50% less additives than the EP oil.

Mobil's latest introduction of Advanced Fuel Economy oils is Exxon-Mobil's advertising at it's finest...in actuality, the Advanced Fuel Economy oils are the same formulations as the products marketed prior to 2008, but the company is sending a message/focusing on a point they feel will now appeal to customers.

If you're considering a 0w-30, I would recommend you look at AMSOIL Signature Series (SSO)...it's in a different league. AMSOIL costs more than this product, but you can probably run it twice as long...
