50¢ per quart charge to recycle motor oil??

I've got a 5 gallon bucket full of used motor oil and gear lube. The local (San Diego) 76 station said they wanted me to pay a 50¢ per quart fee for them to take it.

So much for encouraging folks to recycle oil.

Do most of you folks have to pay to do this???

last time i took my oil to adv. auto parts they took it for free. i believe adv. auto and autozone takes it for free. i would try them. i know autozone only takes oil and returns your container.

Nope, i would never pay. I used to take mine to Murray's, but not I just drop it off at the city service center. They have a pallet out by the garage to drop off used oil.

I know of a few shops that use old motor oil, tranny oil, and such and use it for heat in the shops...

I put it next to my recycling bin and the recycling company takes care of it...just has to be in a clear container...but I live in a more "rural" area

You could always take it to your Wal-Mart Tire and Lube store. They recycle for you. So says on the back of their oils

Thanks all. I took it to Pep Boys and they disposed of all 5 gallons, no questions, and no charges.

I feel like calling 76 Union and complaining about the guy who wanted to charge me $10 to dispose of it.

Yea, they shouldn't charge you. It's stupid when you're actually doing them the favor.

There are some shops here in Colorado that do this, too.

The reason the gas station charged you to take the oil is that they have to pay a service to haul it away -- just passing on their cost. The locations that burn this oil don't have that business cost. Not certain, but suspect that the auto stores also have to pay a fee to haul the oil away. Suspect that they have a better profit margin than the gas station, so they just eat the fee to keep you happy.
