Really any oil should be ok for 3000 miles. Probably best to invest the money on a good filter.
Any oil at walmart would be ok-even the walmart brand of Supertech. You could even go synthetic with the walmart supertech.
I used to get oil changes at garages that used Kendall oil. Probably not the "greatest", but does the job.
but as for oil, Castrol nonsynthetic or Mobil nonsynthetic or even the supertech

There really isn't the best oil you can buy. Imo I think that it's all preference. I personally use Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Wal-Mart has it for 28.50 and use it with their oil filter for $13. Been using it since I've got my car.

You might get more responses in the right section (Fluids and Lubricants).

personally i would get ams oil or mobil-1 if going the expensive route. The cheap route. i use the dyno version of the mobil with a mobil oil filter. i really give my car hell as of late and i havent had any engine problems. but then again it could just be the VQ

for the filter I only use WIX and Purolator. NAPA's filters are WIX, Supertech filter at Walmart is made by the same company as the WIX and is as good as any for a 3k oil change interval(OCI). DO NOT USE FRAM!!! They suck!

for the oil.... well that is really up to you. Pennzoil Platinum and Valvoline SynPower are the two I would use is I was doing full synthetic.
Any Pennzoil is great. Again it depends on you and what you want.

I use Valvoline MaxLife blend (red bottle) because I have unknown miles on my engine and it is a great oil for great price ($14 at Walmart fir the 5qt jug).

^^^ Lucas is too thick for the VQ. Unless you have problems with burning oil and such DO NOT USE IT!

Not true. I also use Lucas and as long as you use the right amount, everything is fine. With their oil stabilizer, a little goes a long way. That is the key.

OEM filter with any brand-name 5W30 (which ever on sale) on every 6month or 37K mile interval, and don't forget a new gasket for the drain plug too.

Last edited by wxm; 05-18-2009 at 01:33 PM. Reason: gasket.

I've had 5 vehicles 3 fords, 1 honda, and my max with 212+k miles and have used castrol gtx with fram filters in almost All of them with NO engine problems at all. I hear alot of people bashing fram but they are ok for 3-4k change intervals. That's the key to "cheap" filters. Just don't use them past 5k miles.

Don't use that stuff in your oil. Do the research. Additives do nothing for engine protection.

Oil stabilizer is not as godd as it seem, just use a REAL syntetic oil and youll be fine!I'm using a quaker state oil filter and redline engine oil 5W30 and this is a great improvement for cold starting in winter...-25C in Quebec!...damn winter!!

you are wrong sir, when i dont add lucas or bg the timing chain rattles louder and drives me nuts!!! the dealer recommends it for higher mileage engine's.

No, I'm not wrong and I've seen this question argued until the cows came home. I've been here since 2001 and I've also seen the research over and over again.

Post anything to show me that oil additives add extra protection to any engine and I'll retract my statement.

It's been found that Lucas oil additives will make oil foamy so it's your engine, do what you want.

Lucas is not going to be your timing chain fix so go to Nissan, spend a little money and get another tensioner to fix the issue.

to the OP, start reading here. Its a little outdated, but it will get you started.

http://forums.maxima.org/fluids-lubr...viscosity.html

Another great place to start reading is at www.bobistheoilguy.com. Great oil and oil filter site.

From the research I have done, if you want to run synthetic, the best oils are amsoil (expensive), mobil 1 extended performance, and pennzoil platinum. The PP seems be your best "bang for the buck" oil. If you want to run conventional, castrol GTX seems to be the front runner.

As for filters, DONT USE FRAM!!!! They are crap. I used to use those until I saw some pictures of them cut open. Now I use amsoil filters. If you buy them in bulk (case of 12) they are the same price as Mobil 1 filters at autozone and they are top of the line. PM talkinghorse or HTPerformance for pricing. Other decent options are Mobil 1 or Wix filters.

Mobil 1 is fine also. I've run it since 120K miles and no problems. I'm at 267K now.

Yes it is fine, however I have seen a lot of questions about it's performance lately which is why i did not include it.

the dealer...which is in the market to sell you more repairs recommends something doesn't mean you have to listen.

if your oil that you're using isn't strong enough to stand on it's own w/o an additive then you should change the brand of oil you're using.

well under "normal" circumstances the fram will do what it needs to. that's to prevent large debris from entering the engine.

- fram uses thinner walled metals in their cans
- their filtering media is recycled newspaper
- their internal valve is a cheap rubber piece or thin metal

generally the entire filter is made very cheaply and they don't really sell the filter all that cheap either.

will it filter? yup
but are you getting what you paid for? nope

if you're engine is running fine then there's no reason why the fram with castrol will cause any issues when changed within 3-4K.
but if you're running in extreme cases then the filter won't hold up too well.

I just robbed Advanced Auto Parts
5 quarts of M1 EP and an M1 EP filter for $30

quarts are almost $8 each and filters almost $13
So I got 3 sets (15 quarts and 3 filter) for $90

Still going to use my Nissan filters since doing 7500 intervals while under (now extended) warranty. Will do 10-15k intervals afterward.
So changed my oil, topped off other fluids, K&N filter was stuffed filthy cleaned and recharged that. Then quick detailed her since waxed last week.

you just don't get it do you? the lucas crap you're dumping in your engine is NOT helping your tensioner issue, it is only masking/hiding the problem by gumming up the works, that's what most "treatments" are designed to do.
