my car weights 1.97 ton, is a pair of 2-ton jack stands strong enough?

Those will be fine. but yeah, like Goney said.. get the biggest jack stands you can buy.

and don't buy that crappy jack. those tiny floor jacks SUCK. spend a few more bucks and get a larger roll-around one with a full length handle and more lift (and stability). Expect to spend about $100 for a decent jack. It will be money VERY well spent.

Have to agree on the jack. I have one of those 2 ton jacks laying around and it barely goes high enough to get the stands underneath the car. Some things are better spending the extra money on

I spent $170 on the smaller aluminum craftsman jack and the damn thing didn't lift high enough to get the shortest damn stands that craftsman sold under my old max.

It works better with the E30 but I still think it should have a lot more lift.

1 1/2 tons.

It looks cool (when it's not dirty).

This is my third one. The first one had a circlip fly off while I was jacking the car down (luckily) so the pedestal was only really supported by three arms. The second one had an allen bolt back out and fly off while I was jacking the car up, so the main roller didn't work and the jack was grinding on the ground with the weight of my front end. Now I check all the bolts every time before I use it to make sure they are snug.

Luckily, Craftsman replaced both of the jacks (since I couldn't find the parts after they flew off) with new ones. But supposedly they only have a 1 year replacement warranty.

I'd like something light and sturdy that will lift high so I don't necessarily have to limit my work to really level ground. But I don't really feel like paying $400 for a jack.

I've had my Duralast 2 1/2 ton jack for the past 4 years; has worked fine for me - the poor, noobish, DIY guy.

Funny I posted that...

Couple days ago I grabbed those stands from the trunk, about to jack the car up, etc... Well, one of the stands were broke! The handle that you raise so that the retractable part (that actually makes contact with the car) can be raised/lowered seems to have disconnected itself from the latch that actually holds that piece in place! Let's just say this stand is now compromised & could've led to a disastrous outcome!

-1 for those stands!

Does anyone know how on earth a floor jack can get a car on those 12 ton jack stands? I want to replace my 6 ton jack stands eventually if there's a way to place the car on them. I like how they are up so high to work on the car.

I have these

and

After buying the duralast stands and creeper I have vouched to never buy duralast stuff again. The creeper was the worst thing ever and the stands are junk.
Wound up buying a $70 craftsman creeper.

Just picked this Craftsman 3-ton jack/stand/creeper set for 100 bucks. Site says $130 but when added to the cart, showed up as $99...might be 'cause I did online order/store pickup.

Since the old Duralast jack barely could get the car on stands (14" lift), this jack has about a 20" lift. Decent height & weight support with stands & creeper, 4.5 stars based on customer reviews...a 100 bucks seems ok.

I have a set of Snap on Jack Stands - 3t, used to have the jack too but it was stolen along with a bunch of my other tools back when I had a Honda Prelude (they'd have stolen the whole car, but my under dash switch wasn't found, so they could work out getting it started)... so they trashed my trunklid and took everything inside... the stands were inside my apartment at the time so they are all I had left from that set...
I've actually not replaced most of my tools yet, just have basic wrench set and socket sets for working on metric stuff... set of screwdrivers, and some electrical testing (12v) equipment.

I got that same setup in store at Sears on black Friday. Walked in at 10:00 a.m. after the crowds had left and there were still a few sets left...$75 Kindof disappointed that I haven't needed it yet...

I had craftsman jack stands, but I somehow left them back in NY when I moved. So I'll be getting new ones. I will get stands that lift to ~20 inches.

Damn, who knew...

I have about 10 jackstands (5 pairs all different brands)....they all work fine.

Not sure why anyone needs 12-ton jackstands. Are you planning to balance an Abrams tank on it?

Why would you need 10 jackstands? Plus an Abram tank weighs over 65 tons...

BTW folks, when this happens the jackstand is still safe. It's just the roll pin that connects the release handle to the ratchet that breaks. This happens a lot if you carry a jackstand by the handle.

To fix it remove the handle from the jackstand, hammer the roll pin halves out of the ratchet and handle, go to your favorite hardware store and procure the replacement roll pin. Re-assembly is the reverse of disassembly.

As for what jackstands I use, I have a small fleet of the 2-tonners and a couple of 6 tonners for the Bronco for the height. The 6 tonners are harbor freight and the 2 tonners are all 20 year old allied ones I have to replace the roll pins in every 10 or so years.

For the OP I wouldn't buy a jack lower than 3 ton. I would also get the full size units. I don't like the compact lifts, they never seem to last. Craftsman makes a nice kit with the jack and two stands, and it lifts pretty high. Good luck.
