Got respect from a z28...

Me and a couple of friends were coming home tonite on the off ramp when we come behind a z28 going really slow. It was black and I noticed a red z28 badge with an SS exhaust and fat wheels. I finally decided to pass him and get in front of him. Well I thought this was gonna p!ss him off and cause him to wanna destroy me in a race.

Well we pull up next to eachother at a stop light. I told him/my friends what a tight ride that was not really directing the comment at him and out of no where he goes "thanks, I really like your ride too!". I was like thanks. I figured he was intimidated by my rumblin' dualies and that he was just sucking up to me so I wouldn't whoop on him. lol.

I asked him how much he pays for insurence, expecting a huge figure, when he said $150 a month!! He says it's becuase he has 2 other cars through that company (allstate). Still, considering I pay twice that at least, It got me thinking. Well we took off and the sound of that 5.7L with a hooked up exhaust blew my 3.0 away. I am keeping my Maxima for like 5 more years but my next car is definatally a GT, Cobra, z28 or SS. NOTHING beats the sound of one of those...imports with turbo's/superchargers sound awesome in their own way, but I think the sound of those big naturally aspired engines is a little better. With that said I am still very happy with my Max and can't wait till I get the 5spd in...I will be fryin rice and domestics that's for sure!

The usuall comments I get on my ride is "weedwacker", "grocery getter" "family hauler", ect. It's nice to see a guy with a very powerfull ride give a complement like that. It kinda makes you feel all tingly inside Anyone else get these kind of comments from the domestics? We all know the riceboys worship us but these comments from the real powerhouses are few and far in between.

Remember if some dumb **** says some ignorant comment about your car just ignore them becuase theres always those people who know a nice ride when they see 'em.

Re: Got respect from a z28...

must have been the flowmasters... he felt a bond. as far as the insurance you have to take a lot more into account... we already know he gets a mutli car discount... how old was he? even if he was 5 years older than you - thats a HUGE difference. maybe he was married... lives in a different neighborhood... etc. i know the feeling though. here in nyc do you know what the MOST expensive insurance is? a kid under 21 with a maxima. no lie. sucks.

anyway, when are you getting your manual? you're going to LOVE your car when you do man.

I got respect from a hot chick in a GT today after I whopped her from one stoplight to the next.

If I only didn't have a girlfriend....I would have been on that like butter on toast.

That Camaro driver still pays twice the insurance that I do

Anyway...dont even bother looking at any kind of Mustang. Stick with the F-bodies. I test drove a 2000 Mustang GT 5spd and thought it was pretty neat, not great, but good. Later that week I tested a 2001 Z28 6spd. Now I know the Mustang is a JOKE compared to the Camaro. The mustang is: slower, more expensive, less comfortable.

Do the math.

Oh and a Camaro would only raise my insurance from $75 to $110 per month

How do you figure that a Mustang is more expensive than a Camaro? You can get a 5spd GT right now for about $22,500 (unless you go with a loaded one then its about $24,500)....

Having owned a 94 Z28, I can attest to the fact that nothing sounds better than a heathly V8. Period. My 94 Z28 had a 3" single out Flowmaster catback. It looked like a bus exhaust and the sound was amazing. I loved taking it up to 4500rpms and then letting it engine brake. Acceleration always felt effortless in that car. BUT, I'd take my Maxima over Z28 any day. Everything about my Maxima (the way it is now) is much better than the Z28. The Max rides better, is obviously put together better, isn't in the shop every 3 months, doesn't pour down gas like a drunken sailor, and the interior is lightyears better. I paid $1200 a year in insurance for the Z28 (age 21-24).

If I was in the market for a new muscle car, I'd be considering a 03 Cobra. My dy o shop got 380rwhp and 390rwtq out of a 03 Cobra with an X-pipe and mufflers. That is a ton more power than the C5 Z06. For $35K, it's a steal especially when you consider that a loaded 02 TA costs 32K.

i'm waiting to see what the 2004 mustang brings us. from some spy shots that car looks really nice... a nice combo of new looks and throwback to the fastback... not to mention it'll finally be off the fox platform. i think once that car comes out i'll decide what car to buy next.

Yea your right insurence is tricky. Lots of factors. He looked to be in his early 20's, probubly over 21. He was probubly more than 5 years older then me. How come Maxima's have such high insurences?? They are in the mid-sized car catagory and unlike mustangs and camaro's people who buy maxima's are mostly middle aged people who don't drive fast!

anyway, when are you getting your manual? you're going to LOVE your car when you do man.
This friday me and my dad go up to Jacksonville to Chaz's (Cbr2) place where we will spend the weekend converting. I CAN'T WAIT! My friend has a '95 SE 5spd max with NO mods with 115,000 miles (Vs. my 65k miles) and his car STILL pulled harder around 30mph vs. my '95 se auto with downpipe, intake and catback. He would spank me off the line too that's for sure.

I'm gonna try to get my dad to buy a digi-cam or i'll just take photo's the old fashioned way...either way trust me i'm gonna make a big thread about it with lots of pics. I'll give my opinion of how much more powerfull the 5spd is over the auto. I hear converting to 5spd will give me the same amount of power as if I supercharged my auto w/stock pulley running a shift kit. Now THAT'S cool.

Well I know for me there is NO way I could get a muscle car. My parents want me to drive a safe car without soo much speed. They also want my car to be reliable and built well. My dads '95 GXE maxima has 177,000 miles and is still kickin.

"I hear converting to 5spd will give me the same amount of power as if I supercharged my auto w/stock pulley running a shift kit. Now THAT'S cool" You've got to be kidding, right? A conversion like that will give you THAT much power?! I know the manuls are faster, but that's an insane comparison.

A supercharger will take approx. 1 second off your ET. 5-speeds are approx. 1 second faster then the auto's. Logical thinking.

For example, theblue, a '97 SE 5spd runs a 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds with intake downpipe and catback. One of Stillen's SMX supercharged automatic Maxima's with probubly tons of bolt-ons plus a beefed up tranny ran a 5.9 0-60. If theblue had all the mods that stillen max did, he'd probubly be running lower then 5.9 0-60.

If you STILL don't believe me, PM sprintmax. He'll be happy to give you more proof.

If you have good reviews on the conversion, I think I will try and do it also. Just need to find all the parts.

Some things to consider here:

Stillen's Maxima as tested by Motor Trend was tested with 58lb Momo Arrows, full tank of fuel, and 40lbs of test gear. The Aaron ran with much lighter factory 16s, no gas, and no seats. The Stillen Maxima would have been significantly quicker if you pulled all that static and unsprung weight off. The quickest 4th gen auto with a stock tranny is running low 14.9s@92mph except for Don who has a built tranny and is running 14.2s. The quickest 5 speed is running high 14.2s@95mph. With a Y/I/E, most decent driven 5 speeds are running 14.7-14.8s@94mph and most autos are running 15.1-15.2@91mph. The way I see it is the autos are about .5 seconds and 3mph slower overall. It's not 1 second. The 5 speeds biggest advantage in the 1/4 mile is 1st gear. Without the 1st gear advantage from 30-90mph, mod for mod, most 5 speeds would have a hard time pulling away from a auto. After 100mph is where the 5 speed will really shine over the auto.

Ive owned both cars, well sort of, a 2K2 Max and a WS T/A 6 speed with the LT1, and an 89 LX 5.0 ! Both V8's ran 12's no NOS or SC. I cant believe he gave you props. My T/A said " The sound of Import Destruction " on the license plate frame....He must be a nice guy. If you want all out ***** performance in the 1/4, a V8 is the easiest and cheapest to mod. They sound so awesome. I misss that sound. But I now have 4 doors, a luxury interior, and still run a high 14. Thats good enough for me ! And only pay 100 a month insurance !

Totally agree....

I can tell any year Mustang or Z28 just by the exhaust note. I love that sound! I've heard a 2001 SS ROAR by me at 150+mph and there is NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING, even close in comparison. I will own one as a toy someday.

Not until my insurance rates drop though. I pay in full $835/6-months through Progressive with no tickets/accidents, but I'm 24(25 in August). I'm also near the US/Mexico border and they rate Tucson/Phoenix one of the top most stolen vehicle cities.

Man I need to get married once I turn 25, hopefully that does the trick. Otherwise, I'll buy some beater and say it's my primary vehicle. I don't even drive the Max, but once a month for out of town trips.

I would consider doing a switch to manual, but my dad would come up with all sorts of reasons as to why I shouldn't. Any way, how much does a conversion typically cost? My insurance ins't too bad; I pay $340 for 6 months with no tickets or accidents and I'm 21 with AllState.
