Auto Transmission Issue

2000SE Automatic. 63000mi. Intake, Ypipe, 60shot.
Well, me and my friends went on a camping trip to upper wisconsin, and we were driving to his house, and im accelerating at 100+mph, in 3rd. well everytime i let off the gas, the car jerks and then shifts out of 3rd. well after a while, it kept going and the same jerk but it doesnt shift out, rather it stays in 3rd, were going about 110 and the revs are at about 5500rpm or so and its not dropping. so i let off the gas, and as teh car is slowing down the revs drop slowly like its climbing down in the gear, well so i get off the gas and put it in neutral to let the revs drop, and when i put back in drive, teh revs stay at idle, and when i get on teh gas, theres no response until like 4000rpm, theres no response until 3rd gear catches again. My thought is that 4th gear stopped catching. I drive teh car easily for a bit, and later we had to stop in a town, and as im driving through town, 4th gear catches again, but only when i let off the gas, when im accelerating......1st gear goes to 3000, shifts, 2nd gear 3000 shift, but as long as im accelerating itll stay in 3rd gear until i let off and then itll shift to 4th, at which point i can acclerate again. Another problem is that the revs never seem to drop properly, like at 90mph when u let off the gas, when the rev should drop it doesnt but rather climbs down in 4th. I'm thinking i messed up the clutch bands and maybe the torque converter, but what gets me is why its 4th gear and idle thats acting up and not 1st 2nd or 3rd, considering i abuse those the most and those are the gears i mainly sprayed nitrous in. Can anyone help me on this?

well what usually happens when u go over 60 and pop it into neutral is the revs drop to idle rev, and when u put it back into Drive it usualyl catches 4th and picks up the rev, which is bad for the car, but in my case 4th gear wasnt catching at all so not really a problem.

When I go down a hill on the highway, I usually go Neutral, and then I'll go back into 'D', but I don't press the gas pedal until I see the RPM increase. I do this and I'm going 75mph.

When I do this, I don't notice anything bad about it. In other words, I'm probably messing it up like you say, but I don't hear grinding, jerking, popping... when it shifts from N back into D, feels like a normal shift of the transmission.

I don't know how it is with auto's in that regard. But from a safety standpoint you should *never* put your transmission in neutral when going down a hill. At the very least you should put it in 1st or 2nd gear.

I understand what you are saying, I DO NOT put it in neutral going down a large hill.. but the brakes still work and if i do not need to slow the car why would I want to downshift into 1 or 2?

If you're just cruising downhill then of course you don't need to downshift. My point was why go neutral when 4th/OD is just fine?
There's nothing gained from doing it, so might as well be on the safe side and stay in gear.

The reason I put it in N while coasting down a downgrade is because in my simple mind... I think I am saving gas (b/c my car is gas guzzler) and since the RPMs are lower, there is less wear on the engine.

Again, That's because I think by putting it into N I'm doing something good.

ok, I thought that is what you were saying.

I do it to pretend that I am actually changing gears like a 5-spd

Re: Auto Transmission Issue

I have pretty much the exact same problem with my car. I don't drop it into N ever though. As far as I know (as well as my shop) it is a broken O-ring that has to do with my valvebody mod. Now that I've read your post though, I'm afraid it might be actually tranny problems I am facing. My car is supposed to go in sometime this week to get everything checked out, I'll let you know what they find.
