There's a 5hp difference in the two, I'm guessing they're equally fast. Is this right?

That's probably a very safe bet.

anyone ever test the various Max's?

I was under the impression that the 95-96 max is faster than the 97-98, and the 99 is even slower. No idea on the 2000-2001, thought somehow the extra 27 hp didn't translate into speed due to the rpms or something. Anyone compare all the years to one another?

A while back I raced a 323Ci, well, wasn't much of a race because the guy was pretty reckless (75 in a 35, hmm...I kind of backed off at 55) so I lost. But I could tell that the car was reasonably quick. You'd think the 323 would be slow at least when compared to the 328. I haven't driven the newer 3 series, but have driven the older M3 which is a blast and quite quick.

I think the 95-96 Max's were quicker than the 97 and later Max's because of the extra emissions control the later models had to have.

it is not just the power

some people think that the 5th generations are a lot faster because they have 32(or 37) more horsepower. The car also gained 300 lbs over a 4th generation. I dont think nissan upped the horsepower just because 222(or 227) sounds cool, (even though it does.) I think that they had to up it just to equal the performance of the 4th generation. I just cant wait for the 3.5 liter, then there will be a huge difference, and I will definately have to get one.

I have heard

that the 3.5 liter will have anywhere from 250 to 270 horsepower, and 235 to 255 ft-lbs of torque. who really knows though? Those are just guesses of a friend that works for nissan, they could be totally wrong.
