UPDATE - MAF problem

here is what happened
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=137444

so I disc the battery and left it on my driveway for 2 days until I got the screws from WILLSE today (thx Will). I tried to make everything look normal, but I'm still missing 2 screws and a bracket that holds air intake to where FTSB is at. Anyways, now I can at least drive it into my garage. Car still won't rev beyond 2500 rpm. I'm so pucked
I'm planning on driving it back to dealer tomorrow morning, its only 5-6 miles away, and I have some questions:

1. Since it still missing 2 screws & a bracket, dealer is going to biotch me about it right? Is it gonna work if I tell them I took it apart to just look at it?? I know i sound naive.

2. Is my MAF still sounds blown? or is that just the rev limiter?

3. After disconnecting my battery for 2-3 days my SES light is still on, anybody know why?

4. What else do I need to do before I take it back to the dealer tomorrow morning?

I feel so stupid right now.......any help would really be appreciated

Nope. They won't honor the warranty. This is Nissan, it's who they are.

2. Is my MAF still sounds blown? or is that just the rev limiter?

MAF = Toast Sorry.

3. After disconnecting my battery for 2-3 days my SES light is still on, anybody know why?

Because your MAF is toast. Disconnecting the battery does not reset the ECU. It's a misconception perpetrated by some ignorant members here.

4. What else do I need to do before I take it back to the dealer tomorrow morning?

Make EVERYTHING look as stock as possible. Right now, yours is not. Therefore, no dealer will touch it for "free".

I would seriously look at renting a 2k2 for a day and simply using that install kit. Spending $20 to $40 is better than several hundred for a MAF. When they are done, simply put the screws and bracket back in the rental. That way, karma will be on your side.

Well, it isn't necessary......

If he just has the right stock look for the MAF (the screws and the bracket he still needs), the dealer will fix it. Then he can just return the rental and no harm is done to either party......

Matt basically summed it up in your thread by saying you should never clean an elctronic device with anything other than electronics cleaner.

the whole time I'm thinking, "Why do you need to clean your MAF with anything other than a dry cloth?".

And what the hell is Frank talkin about with the Frankencar MAF stuff??? I mean this is one person that talks out of his ***.

Re: Re: UPDATE - MAF problem

sounds like your maf is just toast. Just make sure all the vaccuum lines are all connected. If one of those fell off, or is pinched it will set the limp mode like you are getting @2,500.

thx for all the help, I think i'll just try to rent a 2k2 Max. BTW, I'm 21 so I'm not sure if I can rent a car
Is there any 2k2 owner out there that can let me borrow those for 1-2 weeks. In return, I'll send it back to you as soon as possible and also mailing you a $50.00 check. I'm really desparate now, please help

Call Courtesy Nissan and ask to purchase the required bolts you need. It should cost way less than renting a maxima. Or borrow some from a buddy that has a similar car. Or take the other two bolts/nuts and head down to the big commerical nut/bolt place. We have Tacoma Screw. All they sell is nuts/screws/bolts/washers etc... or find some of the exact same bolts somewhere else on the car and then use generic ones to replace the ones you "borrowed". It's not rocket science.

and Jeff, I already called DaveB, its on backorder, and its going to take several days before he can get it. So, i'm still thinking going the rental route. The other reason is, I need to know the exact screws Nissan use for each place.

Like I said before in the other thread. When it wont rev past 2500 rpm that means your maf is gone, toast, not working in the correct Manner. How come you just didnt take my advise?? Tisk Tisk!!

Although you would be far better off with having everything in place there is a slight possiblity you could get away without some of those screws. My car went to the dealer missing a couple of air box screws and an extra braided hose that mysteriously lead to the trunk. hmm... They said nothing at all to me and replaced my MAF. I even told them the MAF was bad when I called them to tow it in for repair. I was expecting to get some flack from them as usual but I guess it all depends on the tech and service writer you get. And as Jeff suggested your best bet may be to just order the screws and install them. If their parts department is anything like the one I go to it won't be a problem because those departments don't talk to each other anyways.

If they can't get the screws in time then go to Lowes or a place that sells metric bolts and just buy them. You cans till go to the parts department and have the guy lookup the parts for you. But they can't get accurate descriptions and sizes unless they look it up in the service manual/program.

Daveb gave me a link to check the inventory of Nissan around USA. The closest one that I found that have the screws is about 450miles away.
one more thing, I always go to the same dealer, I went there several times with my frankencar intake on there, do you think they wrote it done? cuz if they do, I should go to another dealer huh? and do they communicate with other dealers to tell what customer has done to their cars?

They do enter a service history into a database. If the service writer noted something it can easily be found by other service departments. I wouldn't worry too much about it really. Just behave as if you expect them to fix your car and give you no problems about it. Be nice and treat them with respect and they should do the same for you. By law they have to prove that you or your aftermarket item caused the problem to refuse service. But that doesn't mean they won't try if they feel like it.

ok this seems to be the best solution for the problem. Go to the rental car place and rent a maxima. Tell them that your taking a trip up north and you need the extra room. Don't tell them that you actually own a max. Then take the maf off of the rental car, and put yours back on the rental. Call the rental place and tell them the car doesn't run right, and now you can't go on your trip. You might even be able to get them to re-imburse (i think thats how you spell that) you for not making your "trip". Find the screws somewhere else. I think the screws are the last of your worries. If you want to make it look better, call the rental company while you are on the side of the freeway! lol for sure a refund is coming your way! Now all you spent was money for bolts.

I KNOW! I'M EVIL.

Dude I'm in Duluth.

You obviously don't want to do anything illicit as you've been advised many times to do the rental thing and it doesn't seem like that?s gonna happen.

1. I may have some screws you can use. I'll want them back. If you get sheit from the dealer see #2. email me your phone number at maximaman77@yahoo.com

2. The sensor does come out of the bracket pipe. I took mine out over the weekend when I put a REPLACEMENT FRANK into my car. The 1st one had a bad weld in the breather and was replaced at no charge!
I have found it is safer to take the sensor out when working on the intake as you can be rougher with it and not worry about banging it. This part should be available to order with out having to buy the whole MAF. If it's on backorder it'll just be more time to think about what not to do in the future. Live and learn.

Good nite all I'm off to play a few rounds America's Army before I go to bed. If you haven't heard it's a new FREE game based on the new Unreal 3 engine. You can download it here: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=army_download

You play it online at GameSpy.
If you don't have cable or DSL bummer.
