Trunk struts instead of torsion bars

OK this goes for all of you who have custom trunks. I remember seeing one trunk that did not have torsion bars because of the stereo. I'm kinda in the same boat. The damn torsion bars hang down too low in the trunk, especially when it is open. I was looking at a VW Jetta the other day, and noticed the rear trunk opens and stays open by struts. Very intersting idea. I'm gonna take a look further to see if this is possible for the max.

i thought of doing the conversion for the very same reason. alot of trunks use struts instead of torsion bars.. it does save alot of trunk space too.. but to do that on our cars, we might need to modify the rain gutters that runs on the side of the trunk openings..

I was also researching this a while ago. My one friend actually also drives a Volkswagen, specifically a Jetta. One thing I did notice was the actual place where the strut stayed compressed was lower, meaning it had more room for the strut to stay when the trunk was down. We do not have a lot of room there. So, if we were to plan something like this, we would need to find some sort of low profile strut, or have to hack into that area with some sort of saw or something on that note. I am still looking into this because the torsion bars are also getting in the way of me making a custom enclosure for the trunk.....

You can actually mount them other places as well. I'll have mine done within two weeks and I'll post pics. I was only asking to see if maybe someone had a better idea. You don't have to put them in the water chanels as everyone is saying. They waould also be soaked evertime it raied and therefore shorten their life. I'll show you what I'm doing as soon as it's done. Now I just need to find a welder

That's exactly what I'm going to be doing. I already ordered the struts. I'll have pics up as soon as I have it done.

Strut Part #

JdawgX,

Do you happen to have the strut's part number? Or is it the same as the hood struts? I have a 4th gen, BTW...

I'm using struts from another vehicle. I'll let you know if they're the right size and what they are after I have them in. I'll also have to make some mounts including the ball mount for them to fit properly.
