SES and Check Engine...What is the diffrence?

My Service Engine Soon light came on and have no idea why. This is the second time in a week it has come on. I took it ot AutoZone and had thme check it for codes with their OBD-II scanner but no codes came on. I showed him the Service Engine Soon light and he said "no codes came up, your car is fine." Your thinking of the Check Engine light. Anyways the condersation went something like that, but I was wondering what the diffrence in these indicators mean? Did Nissan programm the SES lamp to come on when you reach a certain mile to remind the owner to bring the car in for service or are they the same thing? Thanks in advance.

As others may say, use the 'SEARCH Function' but then that would further prove that maxima.org is a database and not a forum.

There is no check engine, SES is essentially our check engine light, it goes off when a sensor is reporting something wrong, etc. We do not have a maint required light which many cars have which is simply a mileage timer telling you to service your car. SES means something is wrong and there should be a code.

There is no light that indicates a service interval. The Service Engine Soon light indicates a real problem in which the ECU reports a code. Did the guy at autozone check for any stored codes, or did they just check for codes that were pending?

I wish I knew. All I saw him do is plug the OBD-II scanner in and look showed me that it read "0". I guess I need to go to the dealer. Thanks for your help guys.

How do I do that. I tried checking the ECU for a round button or dial that you turn clockwise and then couterclockwise but I guess the 5th gens don't have that on their ECUs. BTW I did a search before I posted and nothing came up. I disconnected the neg. wire and later connected again and the light went away. I wonder if there are any pending codes that will come up again causing the SES light to come on again. Thanks for the reply.
