Maxima passes emissions- looks like MD uses new test
I went to get my emissions tested today, only to find that the old test of running the car on a dyno and getting the tail pipe sniffed isnt done any more for cars 1996 and up. Instead, they simply use an OBD reader that connects to your car's ECU. Needless to say, since my CEL doesnt come on I passed with flying colors even with the Y pipe. I guess this is an acceptable way to test for emissions on newer cars since most of them produce miniscule amounts of emissions anyway. Another way to cheat would be to reset the ECU right before you go in, as it usually takes a while for faulty oxygen sensors/gutted cats to trip the CEL anyway.

That's great becuase I want to add a cattman ypipe and Random tech hi-flo cat in the future. And I've heard it is hard to pass emissions with adding these 2 mods. So I'll keep that in mind when my time comes.
Thanks for the info,

The new emissions does help with mods that don't set off the CEL though

In Texas we just started using the new emissions for OBDII vehicles (96+). The VIR is a sheet that shows what is tested which includes O2 sensors, CEL with engine on/off, EGR, etc. The catch is that you cannot reset the ECU and pass because it checks to make sure the vehicle has miles on it. I'm not sure exactly, but there are three markers that must be passed each with (an unknown) interval. I think you have to drive for at least 100+ miles.

Not quite right on that, there is more going on than you suspect. When they check the emissions via the Diag port, the are looking for OBD "Readiness Monitors" to be set ie. =YES. You will not be able to install a test pipe and go quickly to have your car smog tested. All the monitors must be "set" for your car to pass. If the car has not finished verifying the cat, the monitor will not set (=NO) and they will put your car through a particular drive cycle to get it to set. If it never sets, they will fail your car. Once it does set, it will see that there is no cat present and illuminate the CEL; you will then Fail as well. This _can_ be good for the perfomance oriented driver since you can have performance parts installed and as long as they don't remove/disable the emmisions devices, your car will pass. As an example, you could supercharge/nitrous the car and install a 3" hi-flow cat/exhaust and as long as you keep the emmissions controls intact, the car will pass smog.

Right,
In other words if you reset the ECU just prior to emissions testing you will clear the codes but you will fail emissions because you have set all of the readyness monitors to "NOT READY".
Does anyone know what you need to do to complete a drive cycle?
Idle for a certain lenght of time? rev the engine?

Is this Dalton or Tom from Lightning?
You guys still got me on the dyno list for Sept 6th at 3pm?
Do you mind if I try a pull with an open exhaust?
Is the wide band available also?
Thanks!

This is Tom. You can't dyno on the 6th, you must install a potato in the exhaust, and we will only let YOU use the narrow band sensor. Uh... sorry about that, just a little tired. Yes, yes, and yes. How's she running, Mr. Torque on demand?

Running great, up from 10psi to 13psi, got a J&S Safeguard installed to watch over things
, went from the stock 60mm throttle body to a 70mm unit and installed some larger fuel injectors from a 300ZX TT. I may be getting one of those electric exhaust dump valves if I cant get my 3" exhaust system done in time. I wont be juicing this session though
What do you thing will make more power a full 3" system or a 2.5" system with a dump valve?
See ya next Friday!
