You're been wanting that for quite a while now haven't you? Plans sound good but I don't get my Tax money I'm only 17.

You get tax money???

Geez, what kind of interest is Uncle Sam paying these days? Oh, wait... NONE.

Here's a mod for you that won't cost anything.

Change your W-4 so that you end up PAYING money in April. Use a tax calculator/estimator (turbo tax) and you might be able to get things so that you are paying (or getting back) nearly 0.

Nothing like an easy mod to increase your take home pay.

um, I may have studied law and not accounting, but when a single person pays over a grand in interest (realistically closer to 1600) I think there's gonna be a tax refund at the end of the year. I would have loved to pay cash for my house but my parents weren't that rich. As a matter of fact neither one finished high school. Too many geniuses in the kitchen I guess...

Yeah, but aren't you allowed to claim additional exemptions, even though they won't be taken on the tax return? I know someone with 5 kids, and he claims 9 exemptions or something like that, to try to get his withholding close to what his actual taxes will be.

With two working folks in the house, we have to take extra out of our pay checks so that we don't owe too much at tax time. You want to talk about !

Again, I'm not a tax accountant. I did want to get a MS in finance for kicks, but my employer is only willing to kick 2.5k up to me.

I'm single and claim 0 exemptions. I don't know how it would be ethical for me to claim 9 exemptions. Martha Stewart ethics might allow that, but I'm trained in justice.

Nothing unethical about claiming more exemptions. All you are doing is reducing the amount of money taken out of each paycheck before you see it. 9 would be extreme for a single person with no dependents and would likely result in a penalty for being more than 25% underpaid come tax time.

Another option is to pay estimated taxes. Have nothing taken from your paycheck and then pay your taxes quarterly. This is a big headache and probably not worthwhile for anyone here. I will tell you this though and any decent tax accountant/financial adivser will back it up: You're better off if you owe money on April 15th than if you're getting money back. A refund is exactly that, a return of overpayment and the IRS doesn't even throw in interest for you. This means that YOUR money is working for Uncle Sam instead of for you.

My personal objective is to owe between $200 & $500 total (state and federal). It takes me a total of about 10 hours of figuring things throughout the year to get there but I've been in range a few years in a row now. This way MY money is working FOR ME instead of for the IRS. You're throwing money away if you're getting a refund.

That said, if I did get a refund I would use it on strippers at TD's.

On April 15th, I'm sending some money to the US Government, to help them with their mods.

(I almost always ALMOST break even, but usually owe $40-$80)

I actually did owe before I had the big mortgage--all the "success" on the stock market in 1998-2000. Bought more stock with the "winnings" and it's all gone. I got these crazy worthless stocks that did reverse 1-10 splits, talk about fraud!

That said, can the govt. send you your refund in all dollar bills for when you go to TD's??

Now that is quite possibly the best suggestion I have ever read on the .org. Let's start a petition to send to the IRS!

][ 35, you should be thrilled that you're not giving the government a free loan! Drop a couple bills into a savings account or money market account at the beginning of the year and earmark it for taxes. The interest you earn (potentially taxed) will be free money used to pay off any additional tax-bill you have come April.

Is this post far enough off topic? I'll bow out now and take this to
the OT forum.

Cheers and God Bless TD's (Ten's too if you prefer knock-kneed skanks)

Maybe a rear 02 sensor or if it is around the same time that the second MEVI groupdeal is ready then I will get that. Or at least pay for the second half of it. Other than that maybe just stick some of the money into the account for my loan and just about pay off the max.

The 2nd MEVi GD will happen long before tax time. i expect if everything continues at their current rate, you will be receving your MEVI in late November, early December.
