I was given a price for a 2k2 6 speed demo with 3800miles and it seemed high. It has all option except the HLSD and nav. what would a good counter offer be?

Demo cars have been thrashed. The story that the boss exclusively drove it for a few weeks is B.S.

WOW

I saw in the auto section of the Orange County Register last week, a 2002 Nissan Maxima SE 6-speed for $22,899. They had 8 vin numbers so I think you should for $21K or something before taxes.

I got mine brand new with no miles for less than that and it has everything but NAV (I have HLSD and it was still less).

Save yourself $400 and get a new one instead. Think of it this way... how much would it cost to go 500/600/700 miles away to buy a new one and drive it home?

Let's round *way* up and say it's going to cost $250 to fly one way to the next big major city that has new cars on the lot. You still have $150 for gas to get it home.

edit: just noticed you live in CT. I bought mine in Marlborough Mass from Paul K. Call Glick Nissan in Marlborough, ask for him specifically, and tell him you want the internet deal.

imho demo means the clutch has probably aged 2 years in 3800 miles. I'd say steer clear of it altogether. Problem is the dealership knows somebody is gonna fall for their high price so they wont let it go at a reasonable price. If you want that go for new, and I'd try for at least 5 grand off list. If there's any rebate add it to the 5 grand.

The whole strategy is to level the playing field--aka cash deal (or your own financing). Once you introduce trades, you need financing, you lease, it's used or a demo, there is so much room for the dealer shenanigans. Also, why stop short of Nav and HLSD? Might as well go the distance. Good luck.

I used to work for two dealers. If the car is fast, it's been abused. And by abuse I mean take the mileage and multiply it by 5 at least to simulate the mileage driven as if you were the owner. You'll find out that they can never get the price low enough to justify the purchase.

That's one of the oldest auto sales lies in the book.

That car has probably done 3800 miles worth of donuts. Don't buy it.

Keep the 3rd gen! Even if you get the 2k2, keep your *real* max- it's beatiful. But definitely don't get the demo

they kicked me out of the dealership because three people reported my "dangerous driving" in the bosses demo car. I told them i was driving enthusiastically so i could get the feel for the car, they just yelled at me more. i think its because im 17...

i agree with everyone else.. i would NEVER buy a demo knowing it must have been beat on. not to mention the reason you spend that money and buy a new car is because you are the first owner and you know the car was only driven by you..
also the fact that 2003's are out so 2002's are being blown off for cheaper than usual. i think you should just get a new 2002 and work a nice deal because the 2003's are in, you can make that happen without a problem

imho it's better to buy a car from a perfect stranger. It allows the buyer to throw the hardball right back at the salesperson and establish right away that the buyer is the alpha. At least in my experience name-dropping sometimes causes the price to go up and then there's that fakey politeness too.

Where word of mouth does work imho is in the purchase of a home. In that case, a buyer agent stands to get about 1/2 of a fee greater than 20 grand (less whatever the broker takes from the agent's cut), so he/she'll work for it.

When the day is done though I'd steer clear of the 2k2 Max unless the price is in the high teens.
