i was driving my moms 98 cutlas last night and there was alot of fog. so naturally i turned on the factory fog lights, and nothing happen. well nothing good at least. it made it harder to see. what am i surpose to be looking for when i turn on the fog lights? i'm under the impression that when you trun on your fog lights you can see through the fog. what do fog lights do if it doesn't make it so you can see through it?
Fog lights make your car look cool...thats about it
They are not really intended to cut thru fog, actually no amount of light will cut thru smoke/fog not even the sun.
The most prevalent use for them is so that your car is illuminated and people can spot your vehicle.

fog lights, are supposed to be designed with a sharp cut-off (vertically) and put more light on the ground with the range of low beams and have a wider pattern. Many OE fogs are not designed so (hence your problem with the cutlass). Projector Fogs are the best type available.
What fog lights are supposed to do is, because of the sharp cut-off, it undercuts the fog (right above the ground), lighting up some of the road.
Driving lights (real driving lights are mounting above the bumper), illuminate further and lack the sharp cut-off of foglights, and have a narrower beam pattern. But you can mount them like fogs, and sort of have the best of both worlds. I personally have PIAA 1253 driving lights. I barely have a problem fog (except for the super dense fog where my low beams are blinding me).
Unfortunately, a lot of people do by them for looks (it's their money...not complaining), and make it worse by using SW and blue bulbs.

yeah fog lights are not for the purpose of making the car look better or makin gother cars see u better, its for the road... when your fog lights are on, it illuminates the road better ... when there is fog, you cannot see the ground that well and the fog lights help light up the ground better so u can see where u are going better.. it doesnt really make way for the path u are following, it doesnt better your view at eye hight, but the ground is beter seen.
