Mine doesn't seem that smooth. I bumped it up again so it will be about 700. Weird thing is the defrost will drop it to around 600. Also, I notice the needle on the tach kinda goes up and down, maybe +/- 50 rpm??

I've got 41,000 and never got any major service. just clean and reoil K&N myself. Was thinking about doing the 60,000 major service at 50,000. Anyone else experience what I do? When I had the rental car this weekend, the tach was perfectly still. Even when I turned on the lights, defrost, and heater blower it did not drop one iota. Has my car got an electrical prob? Dang the Maxima has so many quirks.

I have a 96 with 64k. I bumped the idle up a while back to about 800 in park and it hits 650-700 at a traffic light. Still doesnt idle perfect but the synthetic oil helped alot!! Smoother acceleration and idle. I also reset the ECU as well to let the computer know that i bumped the idle back up.

You might want to check your TPS(Throttle Position Sensor) out and see if it is on its last leg. Another thing, what kida of spark plugs do you have??

Smoothness

My first response was kinda brief because I assumed you did eeverythiong else that all the others have suggested. I think the biggest fcators (assuming that everything is OK with your car) that affect the smoothness your idle are the age of your spark plugs and how new the oil is in your crankcase. You can do your 60K mile maintenance a bit early, that will help, but an oil change should do it, and it's easier. If your car idles funny even with new oil then something could be wrong. Check what the other guys suggested, then.
