How did you manage to pull this off?

Yes, double clutch for smoother down shifts.

And there is no way a STS could be responsible for "grinding" and "wearing your synchros." Your tranny fluid could do the last one though. But a STS? Worst it can do is make it a little harder to push into gear cuz you have less leverage, but at the other end the force is the same, no extra wear on synchros and no grinding.

I followed this IceY2K1's write-up, about halfway down the page.

Thanks for the info. I might actually consider this mod now.

Clearly you don't understand the concept of the syncronizer in a late model transmission then.

i have a pacesetter STS, and i've noticed that now it'll vibrate sometimes, its a horrible metallic rubbing sound. its not bad, but annoying as hell. do i need to tighten anything? i've had it apart a few times to change the throw but its only lately its started making noise. if i move the shifter, the noise goes away.
any suggestions?

Please enlighten me. How does changing the throw on the shifter change anything that's happening inside the tranny?

Another option to consider if your shifter is very stiff.

where the short shifter bolts to the shifter rod. it comes with a locknut that your suppose to put at like 13 ft lbs.(not sure what the spec is) If you overtighten that nut, itll make shifting harder.

1) The leverage of the STS shifter puts extra force on many of the components inside the tranny because they are working outside their original design.

2) The lower you go with the STS, the quicker it is for you to shift, therefore the syncros have less time to spin up to match the next gear which sometimes results in grinding and a stiffness getting into gears. This is felt more if you quickly shift at part throttle.

I'll possibly agree with #2, but not #1. #1 is a matter of high school physics and levers. work=force x distance. With a lever, W=W, or F1 x D1 = F2 x D2. D1 is the distance the collar moves and is fixed. For the same shift, F1 is constant (assuming same RPM of layshaft, same speed of vehicle, and same sychros). D2 is the throw on the shifter and F2 is the force your arm applies to the shifter. As D2 is made smaller (STS) then F2 must become greater. But this doesn't affect the other side of the equation. As far as the tranny is concerned, nothing has changed.

Obviously, the shifter and it's linkage are more than just a simple lever, but the overall effect is the same between the stick and the collar, so we can simplify.
