Tranny cooler - worth it going into winter?

I kinda want to get a tranny cooler a) so I don't go stir crazy about not having anything to do to my car and b) because I have heard some REALLY bad tranny stories about the max. Is it worth it going into the winter? If I got one, I probably wouldn't get the biggest model. I live in KY where it gets pretty cold during the winter (avg. high in 30s-40s) and snows maybe every other week. Thanks!

regardless of how cold it is outside, the traany and engine are still going to heat up. invest 50 bux and a hour or so under the car and save yourself a grand unlike me .

A tranny cooler is a tranny cooler, it will work on both auto, and 5 speed

pardon me if I'm wrong, but i figured auto trannies did more work than manuals and thus justified the need for a cooler. true? remember, we're all learning.

ehhhh, tranny coolers are only on autos as far as I have seen...there isn't the same setup on a 5/6spd of routing through the oil cooler etc., for starters. Anyhoo, if you live in a really cold area or don't have a garage, you have to be careful about the size of the TC you install. On one really cold day, my car didn't want to start after it was sitting outside at work all day.... However, you could always hop out and start it at lunch or whatever. I have a garage for nights. I have a BIG cooler.

Yup. Stay small if you live in a cold climate. Bigger is not necessarily better here. The larger ones will make it sluggish in cold weather. Some people zip tie a piece of cardboard over the front of it in winter to keep the temp up a bit.

Why not just use a cooler that will bypass when the fluid is cold and thick? That way the fluid is only cooled when it needs it and you don't have to worry about overcooling the fluid.

These were less readily available even last year. At least...I think...I'm not sure if mine does that LOL! I know B&M repackaged their stuff, but I'm not sure if their older style coolers did this. I got mine like...June last year.

on autos the ATF is used to move the parts around (hydraulic) and to act like gear oil at the same time. it's pumped through out the tranny and when it runs at higher RPM/flow/speed the fluid build up pressure. so all u need is to hook up a cooler to the lines (replace or in line w/ the stock).

on 5spd the gear oil acts as ..well..gear oil. it lubricated the gears and moving parts while u manually shift and clutch. the gear oil is splashed around the tranny case for lubrication...so there's no pressure or pump to move the gear oil around.

since 5spd gear oil never gets as hot as ATF (generally)...a cooler is not needed.

The newer B&M models DO have a bypass valve.

There has been a few cold days here in CT and when my tranny has been really cold with my cooler it gets very tempramental until it gets warm. She wont go into gear very smoothly, sometimes gimmie crap at stop signs untill it gets warm out. It has done this 3 times to me so i took the cooler out and we got one really cold night and everything is now fine no problem at all. Brian

you should probably swap yours out for the new B&M bypass kind that iwannabmw mentioned. They have it at JEGS.

Nah i could be wrong, I asked chaz, if I got a tranny cooler now, would it be a problem with the 5 speed converson, he said no and it would fit on too...

so i took it that they would fit on both

For people who aren't listening, as DanNY expalined it perfectly, you cannot use a cooler on a 5 speed. The 5 speed is a stand alone transmission, everything is internal. There's no pump to move the fluid anywhere, especially through lines that will go to a cooler. If you put a tranny cooler on a auto, when you convert it, the cooler will be nothing but dead weight.
