i am just guessing here.. but more than likely you have a blown flex section on your y pipe and they are going to charge you for a new y pipe / b pipe / muffler and labor
i would find out first what they are charging you.. what wrong with the car, and how long it will take to fix..
because chances are.. you can find it cheaper at the junk yard, its probably a minor thing, and you can do it yourself with some elbow grease and liquid wrench..
even if its a blown flex section.. a muffler shop can fix that for you for $180

If you mean the flex section before the cat. converter - the section with a mesh cover - the flex material is starting to go. Apparantly the flex section is attached to pipe going to engine - another dealer quoted $1000 just for that piece!! Yikes (that's about $660 us funds)

is that what they diagnose as the problem? if so take it to a muffler shop and have them get get you a new flex section.. or check a couple junk yards for a junked 95 and get the y pipe of that..
i bet you will be way cheaper than $500
i bet you will be way cheaper than $500
i am assuming he is not into performance and the dangling legality effect of it.. or he would have just bought one already..
but i am just assuming..
but i am just assuming..

Heck, for $1000 you can get a whole new exhaust from the Y pipe all the way back, installed.

there are a ton of people who would probably be intersted in selling all kinds of used stock exhaust parts since they replaced them with aftermarket parts and want to make some money back.
Whatever you do, do not fork over $ to the dealership. Find which exact part of the exhaust is messed up.. you can either replace that piece or even get it fixed like others suggested.

One Nissan dealer will replace the entire exhaust system for around $1000 ($660 us) - whatever 'around' means. I'll ask him to give me a firm quote .
Speedy Muffler quoted $360 ($250 us funds) from the cat. converter to the tail pipe. But they don't do pipe from cat. converter to engine.

The Nissan dealer said that everything has to be replaced. That even though the converter is okay - that the flex section connected to it simply can't be replaced nor the pipe going to the engine - that the entire converter+flex section + the pipe up to engine has to be replaced as one unit. Is that true??
they won't replace the pipe.. but they will fix a broken flex section.. but you need to find out if thats the prob first [/B][/QUOTE]

here are some options for you..
1) call a couple muffler shops.. tell them you have a blown flex section.. tell them the year make and model of the car and ask them if they can and if so how much to fix it..
2) call a couple junk yards in your area see if they have one available for you.. what you need is a y pipe for a 1995 - 1998 Maxima.. some call it the down pipe.. its the pipe that connects from the header to the cat .. then take it to a muffler shop and have them put it on...
3) post in the for sale forum that you are looking to buy a stock y pipe.. over 2000 people on this site have aftermarket y pipe.. someone has to have one they can sell you at a good price.. then take it to a muffler shop and have them put it on..
4) if you can afford the down time.. contact warpspeed performance in AZ and ask them if they can repair a broken stock y pipe flex section.. http://www.warpspeedperformance.com .. or even try Budget. .they are in Canada.. they might be able to help you out if the conventional muffler shops won't..
