Clutch question, please help!

Ok, so I have been having the occasional problem of the shifter not being able to go into 1st gear and reverse when I start the car (it takes only a few seconds to get it though). Also, I will sometimes have problems downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. There is no grinding when I'm trying to shift, but just that the shifter won't go all the way in on the 1st try (it will once I double clutch). I took the car to the dealership since I thought there might be a problem with the synchros. They said they had one of their guys drive the car around for a while and that there is almost no clutch left. Could this reall be when this problem only happens maybe once out of every 20 times I drive the car and the clutch doesn't seem to slip at all? or is it possible for the clutch to be worn down and not really slipping. I get the feeling like they want to screw me over here (they wanted to charge me $950 to have a new clutch put in).

What transmission fluid are you using? Does this happen only when the car is cold, or all the time? If your clutch doesn't seem to slip at all there could be problems with the pressure plate. If one of the pp fingers is excessively worn or broken you can have sporadic shifting problems.

If it doesn't go into reverse the first time put the shifter back to neutral, release the clutch pedal, depress the clutch pedal again and shift it into reverse. Same thing for the first gear. For first gear I always shift it into 2nd before I stick it into first.

And damn $950 sounds WAAAAAAAY too much.

Not sure what type of tranny fluid is in there, just whatever they replaced it with at the infiniti dealership before I purchased the car (it had all its service done at the same dealership). I had a few friends try driving the car, and we couldn't replicate any problems. I am really upset that infiniti would tell me that I need a new clutch if I didn't. Then again, when I bought my car I purchased an extended 3 year waranty, I guess if they realized that there weren't any problems maybe they thought they could convince me to buy a new clutch from them. I'm going to take the car to an independent mechanic just to see if there really is anything wrong. If there isn't I'm defintely going to give the dealership hell about this.
