Shifting into Neutral after high rpm

A friend of mine made a comment that it's not good for the car/engine/transmission after I shifted into neutral after redlining 2nd gear.

Is this the case? Is it truly more harmful to shift to neutral after any type of high-rpm rev?

I'm going to say no on that one.

the only thing I have heard of the sort is that you should double-clutch when drastically changing gears. so if you redline 2nd you may want to let the clutch out in neutral and then put it back in before going to 5th. this allows some transmission peice (drive shaft, maybe?) to slow down so it doesn't go from 6500 RPM to 2500 RPM in 1/2 second.

how could it do any damage? when you hit the clutch to change gears the car is in neutral anyway, youre just not going into another gear

You may wear the syncros if you force it hard.

Though I do have a problem when doing a high RPM run, say 6500 in 3rd (+- 100 MPH) and put it in neutral. The RPM drops and then stalls. Not fun at 100 MPH!

You won't wear any syncros going into neutral though. And if your car stalls, then you have a problem.

I read an article once where this guy drove some car on the salt flats, drove it up to like 200 MPH, and he said something about easing off the gas in gear, then putting into neutral after he eased off the gas. I think it was a C&D article, but not sure. He didn't say why he did it, but he specifically pointed out the fact that he did it. Maybe some tranny guru here can explain??

You need to clean your throttle body if this is happening to you.

If you shift into second while doing 90mph, yeah that could do some damage. But seriously, other than wearing out your clutch (which is expensive to replace) instead of your brake pads (which are inexpensive to replace)......no, not really.
