January '03 Car and Driver - Who wrote the letters?
The first one says "Mischa Aaron Aronsky" but Bill, I'm looking in your direction... excerpt follows...
"The Maxima's soul was stolen for 1995 and replaced with lame, champagne paint (so I know it's not Jeff
), cheaper seats, and wheels covers (and the 5th generation Maximas aren't much different)."
The other one is a 5th gen owner harassing a C/D writer about saying the 2002 6-speed had "lukewarm hustle" and other choice comments. I agree with this one here... we've been awful quick to think family sedans with 14.7 quarter mile times (from their test) are "lukewarm".

I have some beef with one article a C&D editor wrote.
Maxima: More Gears, More Power, Less Distinction
The editor writes that the maxima lost it's flare starting in 95, and that the current 2002 doesn't offer anything more than other cars. He compares it to the WRX which is faster and cheaper, then compares it to the TL-S, and says the Max does not distinguish itself from this car.
First off, in 95 the VQ series engine was introduced, that has been the major component that has put the Maxima on the map.
Second, comparing a Max to a WRX is the most retarded thing I have ever heard of. Those are two totally seperate markets, the max is not intended to compete for people who would want a WRX
Third the Type S. He lists the Type S as having a slightly higher 0-60 time, and .1 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile. So the Max is a little faster, no big deal right? Wrong, the Max was listed as getting 22mpg, and the Type S was listed as getting 19. Not to mention the price difference, the max at 28,000, the TL-S at 33,000.
So a car that is cheaper, faster, and gets better gas milage doesn't seperate itself from others in it's class, I think it does.
