hit and run question

Hey guys, I got a question for you. My car was involved in a hit and run and was wondering will my insurance go up if I claim it?

Re: hit and run question

If somebody hit you and ran, then your rates shouldn't go up. At least that's what my insurance agent told me. And a couple of people I know got involved in hit and runs, they both claimed and their rates have not gone up.

That's one where anyone could say that (not that you would say it if it weren't true). Would fall under collision and it should make your rates go up. The rule is if you can avoid it, don't claim it. If it's $600 in damage and your deductible is $500, just pay it out of pocket.

What about if the victim was able to get the hit and run vehicles license plate and description of the car? Would that help?

Depends on what state you are in....some states have the No Fault law, where it does not matter who was at fault, you both have to pay.

I don't know how it works for a no-fault state, but in Ohio we have Uninsured/Underinsured coverage. My understanding is that medical bills from a hit-skip are covered as a nonchargeable claim regardless if they find the driver. Damage to your vehicle is covered as a nonchargable accident *if* you get the license plate of the offending vehicle and can make the case that he damaged your car.

You need to speak with your insurance agent - your rates will not go up if you don't make a claim, so it can't hurt to ask.

thanks... not that you know me or my opinion matters, but this might be the single most adult thing I've ever read here.
