Why is it necessary to disconnect the battery . . .
I'm not sure, but perhaps it's so that the electronic components lose state information.. (ie. to reset the ecu, etc.)
Or perhaps it follows the same reasoning applied to other things... Ie.. why do you unplug a computer before working on it? Or why do you unplug that toaster before taking it apart ? :-)

when ever you are messing with sensors you should reset it if u dont u might have a problem, your car has to learn the air a fuel ratios with a cai and y pipe there is alot more air going threw your engine and out the the other end, there fore your car has to compensate for fuel and other things.

it helps to reset the ecu
when you install a new mod without doing it, you don't gain the full potential of the mod as fast. It is kind of hard to explain. If you compare it to something like gas mileage, then it makes sense. If you drive 400 miles on a tank of gas, 200 of those miles you drive very moderately and achieve a high MPG, then for the next 200 miles you drive like a bat out of hell, it will bring your good average down, but not as bad as if you just drove like a bat out of hell. I dont know if that made any sense. But if you install say a y-pipe, the computer will read a higher flow average from its sensors, so if you reset the ecu, then it will affect it more from a fresh start, rather than if you didn't reset the ecu.

OK, let's see if I'm getting this.
If I don't disconnect the power to the ECU prior to installing the mod, the variance in air/fuel ratios may be too large for the ECU to handle and it might throw a check engine light. On the other hand, if I remove power to the ECU before I install the mod, I'll force the ECU to "rediscover" the air/fuel ratios when it reinitializes. In this case, the ECU won't have any previous settings to refer to because I wiped out its memory when I disconnected the power. It therefore shouldn't tend to throw a check engine light so quickly. It should also learn the new settings faster than if I hadn't disconnected the power.
Does that make sense?

Resetting ECU after mods
Many of the questions you guys are asking are the same ones Dallas and I have of every Nissan mechanic we can find, with 16 different answers. If anyone knows who is a real bonifide expert on this subject we would love to hear from them so we can post it with instalation instructions for our y-pipes and for our soon to be out CAI.It could also be added to the FAQ area. I know the VG,VE, and VQ are all different, at least according to mechanics I have talked to. Alot of guys who install mods at the dyno want to redyno right away and are disapointed when they don't get as much gain as they expect to. Case and point is at the recent meet in Dallas, with Matts car. He actually dynod with less power after the WarpSpeed y-pipe install. He didn't really start to feel the performance gains for several days.AKAICEBERG had a similar story of not feeling full power for a day or two. Please e-mail us if you know THE MAN. Thanks Dan WSP
