It's the $$$ I put into the Max by keeping it instead of purchasing a car that depreciates less rapidly

Try paying $2400 a year for insurance!
Only upside is that I get all my tickets squashed

Well it better get warm quick so I can ride my bike again! 0-60 in 2.6, 41 miles to the gallon...

1.84 for gas...man what a rip off. Especially with petroleum companies making record profits.

You'd better lube up, because I think it's going to go a lot higher.

At least you can get 93-octane! 91-crap is all I can buy.

Man you guys are paying high insurance rates. I pay $850/yr for insurance. Make sure you call several companies and negotiate a rate, don't just take what they give you. I got a few hundred off just for saying I'd switch my wife and homeowner's insurance to someone else if they didn't come down more.

You should applaud yourself for being honest and paying that BS tax. ALOT of fraud takes place in CT where people register their cars in NYS to get away from it, and then blend into the haze of the tri-state area. They've gotten even trickier by actually showing the owner of the car to be a relative who actually lives in NYS, yet the car spends 90% of its time on CT roads. Let's say you had an expensive car, just think, all that fraud to save $750 per year. And if caught you pay big time.

Me, I hate insurance. We single guys have to tow the line for married guys, their wives, and girlfriends.

NYC parking tickets
double parking, fire hydrant, bus stop, no standing, no parking, etc.. are all 105$ now.. 105$ parking tickets! worse than moving violations... although it can be avoided, it still sucks.. pretty hefty fines for such offenses in my eyes.

other is gas.

when i had school, i spent 80$ on gas weekly.

insurance doesn't bother me that much although i grunge when paying it.. i'll typically feel bad for a few weeks and forget about it for a while since i pay every 6 months..

slightly different thought

It just occurred to me that my list of things I hate spending money on when it comes to cars got shorter as I got older. For example, the Max I bought cash, used, whereas I made steep payments through my 20's. I'm well over 25, married, and living in MN, so insurance is a song. And MN registration seems far less than CA registration (where I lived before). I don't go through tires as fast (wives don't like burnouts). And of course, I had far less money to spend on cars back then. Go figure.

The only thing I can think of that costs more is oil, since I do them religiously at 3K these days, instead of "um, when's the last time I changed my oil?" in my youth. Of course that ended up costing a lot more after I blew an engine

Interesting thoughts. I always say a car payment can only be about $350/mo, and should not be for any more than 36 months. I guess that has become the standard because those were the terms of my Maxima. I haven't budged as my salary changed. The bottom-line on that one is that I can only borrow roughly 10-11 grand, which is fine on a Maxima which would sell for say 22-24 grand fully loaded new. Problem is when you want that A4 or equivalent, all of a sudden you need to come up with 25 grand cash or so to stay true to the 350 and 36. The only other way is to pay more, lengthen the term, or lease. Leasing is never an option in my book, so I think the larger payment is how I'd cheat my brain into a nicer car!

I've made payments on only one of the 7 cars I've owned, thank god. This is why: When I got the Max, the previous owner gave me a big packet of records on the car , and he happened to leave his financing papers in there. Turns out that he bought the car new in 1997, for just under 27K w/$1500 down, at a 14.99% APR. His payments were $644/month, for 60 months Total cost of the car, to him, was $40,090. And he sold it to me for $8K. Ouch.

I dunno, the Max is an awful good car, but not $40K/80%depreciation good

Anything that doesn't make it better

I hate having to pay money to get the car back to the way it was. IF the car is running bad, and I can't fix it, I hate to have to pay hundreds of dollars and not come away with more hp, better handling etc.
