300ZX Brakes Install, with Pics.......
Well guys, I finally got around to putting 300ZX Brakes on my 96 Maxima. I got a set of loaded Aluminum Calipers from a 1991 Twin Turbo Z, Brembo Crossdrilled/Slotted Rotors with cadmium plating (which will probably wear off), OEM pads, 300ZX Stainless Steel Braided Brake Lines, and 300ZX Speed Bleeders. It took me a few hours to do the install. I didn't encounter any hard points and all of it was mostly common sense. I had a hard time finding the lighter Aluminum calipers and was going to settle for the heavier Iron ones, but I finally found some from a yard in NC. I had the calipers powdercoated candy apple red. The reason I stuck with OEM pads for now is because I am now poor and couldn't afford the Axxis MetalMasters or the Porterfields. But all is good.
The wheels BARELY clear the Nissan logo on the calipers, but they do clear lol. I took some pics of the install and at various stages during the day. Sorry for the dirty wheels and car, but suck it up lol. It is freezing outside and I don't have time to clean it up.
When I finished installing them, I took it out for a ride. I absolutely fell in love with the braking distance. The car absolutely stops on a dime. There is no sluggishness in the pedal and it feels better than my mom's 2k brakes, which to me feel awesome. All in all, this is one of the mods that I can definitely live with day to day lol. Anyways, here's the site for the pictures.
www.sphosting.com/smg/images/300ZBrakes/
Total Cost for 300ZX Brakes:
Calipers - $70.00 for the two
Powdercoating - $60.00
Rotors - $125.00 for the set
SS Lines - $93.00 for all 4
Speed Bleeders - $10.00 for all 4
Total: $358.00
All thanks goes to Aaron95Se for the install. Although he didn't physically help me on the install, he did compile a bunch of 300ZX Brake install internet sites into one thread here on the .org. Reference: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=173019
Anyways, I want some opinions lol. Later guys. Now, I am off to finishing the polishing on my VI....

That looks sweet. I want to do this mod in the future. Is the 300zx calipers plug and play? Is there any modification needed for this setup on the maxima?
thanks

Well, for the most part, they were plug and play. The only part that wasn't plug and play was in this picture: (Copy and paste it)
http://www.sphosting.com/smg/images/...kes/300z16.jpg
That little part has a tiny lip on it, that when installed, the rotors would barely touch. So, all I did was dremeled some of it off. and I also tapped it in with a hammer. All is good now. But yes, for the most part, it is all plug and play.
Sprint, it is funny that you say that because they are 300ZX rotors, which is really weird. They do almost look too small, but the pads touch all of the rotor, and still leave a few MMs on the top of the rotor where they do not touch. But all is good.
As far as clearence, it is TOO close lol. I was almost opted to shave off the emblems because it was so close, but they add to the "bling-bling" factor lololol. Anyways, glad you guys like them, because I certainly do....

And as I see it, you can just shave the part of the caliper off a little bit where it curves around the top of the rotor. This will let you keep the full 11" rotor size, without having to mill it down......

I think I was one of the main proponents of the 3mm thing. that's what the people before me did, so I did it. This was like 3 years ago and I don't know how many people I've told to shave the 3mm. At that point, only a handful of people had done it. But you are correct that if you shave the caliper a little, you don't have to shave. I found that out when I replaced the rotors.

Hrmm .. Looks sweet for the price. I was dreading the pricetag of doing a brake upgrade, but for that price, I'd definately be interested, especially since my buddy who worked the SC with me has half his garage as a machine shop . Any idea if they'd clear 40mm offset tantrums? Or any estimation on how much larger they extend the caliper towards the wheel?

I believe with the Tantrums you are okay. Kevin(g) had the 300z brakes and tantrums and it cleared fine.

Well, the 26MM caliper mainly refers to the rotor width and all. Camparing it to the 30MM caliper, they are almost identical, just smaller in width by 4MM. I'd say that it probably will not fit, atleast maybe with spacers it may.....

The link with Asad's caliper write up shows this clearly.

I'll let you know for sure if I can ever get my hands on a set of rotors to test fit tho.
If I do need them, I've got 20 and 32mm adaptors....

Sorry, but I don't think you are right. I did a test fit with a few 3mm spacers and washers in place of the brake disc hat, and my 5mm spacer, and it almost cleared. I'm sure the caliper would clear with a 10mm spacer at the most.

On my setup, with the width and offset of that wheel if I went with spacers that size the wheel would stick out...........not good
Perhaps the 3rd gen geometry is a bit different.....fender wise.....etc.
