Not sure where everyone is but I assume you know that every incoming and outgoing call you make from your extension appear on a report. The same is true from your home phone but your local carrier does not provide that to you.

You must then know the same is true for your internet activity as well. These days and especially the way things have been lately, companies are scrambling to charge back departments for their services. Obviously the days of hubs are gone and the cost is not cheap to provide a port off of a Cisco switch. Nor are the multiple T1's to the ISP.

What I can see is news, weather, sports, and sex are big no-nos from work. Interestingly enough to ban financial sites is a big taboo with management. Just be careful out there, it's not 1998 anymore. Seems like companies are looking to get lean and the job market isn't what it once was.

We are a communications company and sell web hosting services. It's on everyone's computer and we do everything on the internet (not always the intra net). We just merged with a company and exchange reports and budget over the internet since they aren't hooked into our system yet. If you eat lunch at your desk, you are free to do whatever you want with the internet AS LONG AS IT'S NOT ****. We even have software that limits it. For example, I cannot check to see if I'm on the maxima.org plate drive list from work because it says that doug's site is a "RISKY SITE RISK FACTOR: PORNOGRAPHY". Also, some pics in sigs (not wicked's funny enough) don't come up for the same reason depending on where they are linked to. But, our techs get directions to customer sites via yahoo! Maps and we order take out over the internet to the few places that use it, etc., etc. On weekends, people will buy movie tickets online before they go out. In fact, some of the VERY FEW people who don't ahve internet at home are allowed to stay after hours to surf if they need to for e-mail or research or whatever, but again, no ****.

I am also the director of my department and have direct reports. Because of everything we do on it, unless it's obvious (like this bulletin board), you can usually but no always tell if people are using it for personal use or not. If they are during non-personal time(lunch and afterhours), I'll talk to them about it, but I have good people and we have so much sh** to do every single day, they can't get everything done if they surf and it would be pretty obvious. I'm sure my company is in the minority, but it's out there.

Yeah but you are talking about lunch time though. I am talking about surfing regularly while you are working 9-5.

Fine then - you're right - no company is stupid enough to knowingly allow people to surf the net for personal reasons while the employees are getting paid.

Not So...

When I was a technician for Compaq they could care less what you did while you were talking on the phone with a customer. We used any site that we could find on the internet, not just our own. I always had a window open with news and another with Maxima.org or the 3rd gen site.

We also had the nasty habit of playing java games also.

when you said "any site" you can find on internet, does that include **** site?
not asking whether you surf **** site or not, asking if you do, will it be allowed.

Well ok, a **** site would get you fired, there was also another site http://www.compaqsucks.com it's a website of former employees that hated working there, if we visited that site it was immediate dismissal.
