I got burned twice from online transactions. I wouldn't buy anything above $100 from someone online anymore.

Oh! You aint kidding! I have to say this dentist has no common sense as I found out when I worked in the IT dept of one of NY's most prestigious hospitals. These doctors are freaking brainless with it comes to common sense. maybe its because I dont have $55K laying around to play with but YOU JUST DONT WIRE THAT KIND OF MOOLAH TO ANYONE OVERSEAS PERIOD!

Just cause a dentist got scammed, does not mean all doctors are horrible, stupid, incompitent business men. And as I was reading that story - I did not get the idea that the M5 buyer (awesome car) was a foolish moron, just someone who got taken by a pro con-artist. And he did not send the money over-seas, he sent it to an escrow site that was set up and controlled by the con-artist seller.

Saying that all doctors are brainless, is just as ignorant and childish as saying all Miata drivers are homosexual.

Im not trying to start a flame war or anything - - just trying to make a point.

I got My car through autotrader.com, but I limited my car search to within 200 miles. This way I could go see and test drive what I was getting. I would never wire that much cash for something I can't see up front.

Can't say I feel sorry for the Dentist. I get screwed every time my dentist works on me. I don't even want to know why my zipper was open last time I was put under. Nice dream though.

As for buying a car on Ebay: I found my Max there. But I flew 1000 miles to look at it before I bought it, checked it out on CarFax, and researched the seller. I drove it, inspected it, then, I bought it outside of E-bay and drove home. I save a few $K. I've had the usual used car bugs though.

Ebay is a good place to look for a car, but not to buy one from.

I don't mind spending less than $1,000 online for stuff like eBay. I would be happy to spend more with someone that has a legit business website and take CC's directly.

I would never buy a car online! I look all the time, but I would never buy one without seeing the car and meeting the sell in person. I drove about 8hrs each way to get my car.

I had these 3 guys bring there car into my old work that they had just purchased off of ebay... it was an old 70's ford, can't even remember the model now... anyway, the guy had sent them pictures of this perfect car, and this car was far from perfect, holes in all the seats, drivers seat was falling apart, massive oil leaks, radiator leaks, thing barely ran. They had spent all there money on plane tickets, I think they were from Michigan, and were stuck in WA. They confronted the guy, but he refused to give them any money back, and they only had one way back to Michigan, drive the car. I did everything I could for them, but in the end wished them luck driving that POS back...

Guys I understand where you are all coming from. But please listen to me before you think so negative about buying cars online. I found a great deal on a '97 GXE automatic, sunroof, premium sound system, GREAT CONDITION. I bought it for $7600 shipped from CA to NJ. A screaming deal whereas other places had pretty much the same car for $3K-$4K more. I spoke to the dealer her name was Ellie for hours on end asking her about everything. The dealer was very pleasent and guess what? I didn't get ripped off. I received the title in a week. And the car was shipped in 2 days. I received it 2 weeks later in flawless condition. Never been in an accident, exactly as described. Could I have been happier? Probably not. Did I save a ton of money? Sure did. You have to understand the seller, get information about the seller, and the sellers company. I for one would not buy from a private party rather would buy from a dealer who has many cars that they are auctioning off or selling locally. I got off lucky but I mean there are millions of cars on Ebay I'm sure the scam numbers don't run nearly as high as the number of successes. You should research the car, get a ton of photos, talk to dealer see how they react etc and if you feel comfortable go for it. Plus I bought it on credit card so God forbid in case of anyhing happening I would have been able to dispute. But not all deals are bad, yes some are but not all. Here you have a fellow orger (me) thats real happy with his Maxima.

I sold my 300zx to a guy in Detroit on ebay. He sent half the money, I sent the car but kept the title, when he got it he sent the other half and then I sent the title. Worked out well, but then again I advertised the car with every flaw being known so there was no surprises.

I saw a story like this on one of those Judge shows. The guy only bought a one-way plane ticket because he was planning on driving the car back home. Once he saw the car, he didn't think it would make the trip back home. I think he sued for the airfare also.

Where do you think the dealers get the car from?

Private party

You lucked out in your senario. I personnally would not buy a car that I can't sit in and drive.

Though I wasnt saying all doctors are brainless, however, the majority of professionals i have met in my field tend to lack several ounces of common sense. Can you imagine what they think of that doctor now? I suppose their scam is a free dental appt.

Sounds like Maxima.org... lots of noobs come on here selling things and then jack your money. Has happened to me three times now. I'm done buying from noobs, only trusted members for me now.

This case is taken to an extreme though, I can't imagine paying $55K for something I've never seen with my own eyes. %500 yeah, $55K, no.
