Anyone interested in a $1k big brake kit?

My mechanical engineering buddies wont let me let go of our drawings that we created over a year ago... its been pushed to the back burner due to recent work and other things but we're back on the project to revive MaximaDriver.com....

here's the deal. its already designed for the 4th gen. Using Wilwood 4 pot calipers, and the 12.2" rotor with aluminum hat. These kits will be a direct bolt on with no washers to get the correct fitment..

all i need is some capital to get it going. ie. part of your final payment will go into the production costs of the kit..

the 5th gen kits are practically done too, just that we've been camping on this project for quite some time now, i've sorta lost the gauge of how many people would be interested in this brake kit.

13" kits would not be hard at all, just getting the bracket elongated is pretty much it.

so i'm asking you, the Maxima community, is anyone interested?
if so please reply to this thread. probably will need about a 40% down payment to get the machine shop going.

if you guys dont know me, i've been around this site for a while, did a few prototyping here and there, and i only want the best for maxima drivers. if you have issues or questions please ask away.

this kit will come with brake pads, and hopefully a set of SS lines for the front..

thanks!

*bingo* we have a winner...stupid baby rear brakes look very very very underdeveloped. But so far..the 4piston wilwood calipers/13" rotor for 900 bucks with cables and lines..seems like a steal.

I think if somebody put their brains/know-how into developing a tight-steering for 4th gens they could make some coyne. Imagine if your 4th gen could be made to feel like a RS-X S or Mazda 6 in the steering, that would be something. Must not be too easy to do since even the big boys don't seem to offer anything. I think that might be worth spending a grand on.

Matthel,

If you have connections to a machine shop willing to make brackets... give me an email. I have some ideas.

Well, since power steering is all hydrolics, I wonder how hard it would be to change the pressure to use less fluid assitance to turn the wheel. That would probably tighten things up abit

Other kits

It sounds like Cheston's closest to the Fastbrakes kit (which has since modified their bracket, according to Brian at least), and in the last GD that never materialized, the prices nearly matched. Fastbrakes sells for $1300 regularly it seems. (You're still using Superlites, right Cheston?)

SSBC offers the 4 piston kit for $1500, with 1 piece rotors of undetermined width. The 12" and 13" 2 piston kits are "coming soon" according to the site. Are they available elsewhere?

Precision offers Dynalites and a 13"x.81" 1pc rotor for $1K. Going to Superlites, a 2pc rotor or a thicker one gets the price going up quickly, which is probably why Cheston and Fastbrakes stopped at 12.2". The value's there. At least Precision gives you all kinds of options.

As far as Cheston's question, it took some effort on Sleeper's part to get the Precision GD to go, so I'd guess that demand's low at the moment. The $1K (doesn't it 4th gen fit 3rd as well?) looks like a great bang/buck though.

Chunger, do you still have your Fastbrakes writeup anywhere?

Hmmm these would fit 3rd gens, no?

Also I've heard some stuff (dont remember where) about alot of big brake kits not having dust filters (or dust caps or something?) and so brake dust gets into the calipers and they need to be rebuilt insanely often?

But heck I'd interested in any good quality big brake upgrade (assuming it doesnt crap out every 1k miles).

use a UDP on the power steering unit ... slowing down the pump will make less pressure; its how they do it on GM (camaro's).

I would be in for a 5th gen kit. I just want to know if there is enough interest to do this. I don't mind paying for some a little early as long as it goes through. Please let me know.

Here

Yes, NONE of the Wilwood calipers have outer dust seals...
You need to be aware of that each time you change new pads as you have to make sure the pistons are clean before pushing them back in.

I just rebuilt the 2 calipers with new Square 0-rings and 8 pistons (I learned the above lesson the hard way). Seals and 8 pistons cost under $100. I'd personally would have them rebuilt each time (see below).

But to be honest... pads will last about 2-4 years depending how hard you use them (at least the large Superlite ones). I tried the POLY E compound and it is too aggressive (F/R bias) for non-ABS cars... I just switched back to running on POLY T's last weekend.

yea. i'm just trying to get a kit out for the budget track racer,
really big brakes are only needed to prevent fade over repeated hard stops,

my first initial pricing would be around $1k just to get everyone interested....

i know people are hesitant on brakes due to the costs, but in reality, better braking will assist in handling characteristics..

the two piece rotor design that we have will shave off ~ 2-3 pounds off the stock rotor weight...

well if people are interested. feel free to email me.

i want to work with Matthel in getting a 4 wheel kit out that wont adversely affect the brake booster/master cylinder...
