Opinions on Tokico Illumina

well

we installed a set of Illuminas on a 96 Max the other day. everything is remove and replace, no modification needed. Finished it all up and test drove it for awhile. Nice and comfortable ride, have the setting at 3 both front and rear. didnt get a chance to go down any curvy roads. My inital impressions were that they dampen better then the AGXs, of course they do cost like $100 more.

What type of springs were used? Also what tires and did you replace strut mounts, bearings, bumpstops, etc.? Would you recommend this setup to others who don't want the firm bounce of agx's or the pricetag of koni? I have been in the process of buying struts and shocks for three weeks at least now, and today I saw a group deal price of $452 shipped, I may go with these but not without justifying to myself the extra bread opposed to the agx's, or the ability to shorten the koni's via motivational. Too many options now!

i wouldn't be surprised if the illuminas are actually better then the agx...when i had tok blues the installer installed it wrong so it died prematurely...but for the short while when it was good...it rode really nice...

seems like illuminas work well for other cars, it's just that the blues never last on our crs, so i think that ruined the rep for the illuminas in my mind.

Illumnias are great for many many other cars. I believe and always believed that they were better then AGXs. Im not saying AGXs are bad, but their juss not as good, but they are prolly the most affordable.

installed are Eibachs and Illuminas. New bolts front and rear and also come with new bushings.

are you comparing same wheel/tire/springs when you compare shocks to shocks? If not, your opinions are moot to me, no offense.

If you strictly talk about reputations from other imports, then the Illuminas should be a cut above the KYB AGX.

The primary thing working against the Illuminas are the $100 premium over AGX, the POOR POOR POOR reputation of the Tokico blues on 4th gens, and the time it took for Tokico to get off their butt and get to market first.

Having said that, assuming I keep the 99 I'll be going with Illuminas because I've had a positive experience with Tokicos, but those are in my 3rd gen, which are valved properly compared with 4th gens.

i think i will get these in April since JIC's are only for crooked admin's and moderator's who like to hold on to people's amp's while they suffer with 300 watts pushing a 1500 watts RMS Subwoofer

I talked to a guy at Tokico about a month ago. He said the Illuminas should be available for the 5th gens around Summer time.

I had the Illuminas on my 99 Eclipse. I would recommend them any day of the week.

That's weird. I posted the results of installing them on Papasmurf's car last December. I guess you must've missed it.

considering not many people use illumina's i found your post very informative. i was under the impression that illumina's have better dampening than agx's from before. only thing in my way is, as you said, the difference in cost.

what type of warranty did you get?

Hey Matthel,

thanks for the thread, I almost forgot about these shocks.

I have to be honest and say that I would honestly pay more money for these over the AGXs if there are enough people who say the ride quality (over road imperfections, speed bumps, etc) is better than the AGXs.

Anyway,

for more reference...

I'm also looking for a better dampening strut over road irregularities, speed bumps, etc. to go with my H&Rs. I'm just not sure if I should get the Illuminas or KONIs. I'm leaning towards the Illuminas but I'm going to wait for a couple more people to try them out and get positive results before I buy anything.
