Hey guys. I'm 17, and live in Ontario Canada. I'm beginning to start the hunt for my first car and would like some help. I'd like a sedan, as I wouldn't mind the extra doors and room for friends and gear and such, but I'd like a nice small coupe as well. I've noticed some '89 to '93 240SX's for sale around here, and wondered if they'd make a good first car. I hear the back-seat room isn't too bad compared to other small coupes, and that they are good, reliable cars. Another plus is that they're 4 cylinders, so buying gas wouldn't make me poor. Rear-wheel drive is a sure bonus for me, and I believe all sporty cars should have this config. Don't get all over me for wanting rear wheel drive and say I can't handle it, because I know I can. I've driven a lot of half tonne trucks with no weight in the back in winter, and have kept myself out of trouble. I know the '89 to '93's wouldn't be the safest car with no airbag, but what do you guys think? They're not very expensive, and what about insurance? I believe 240SX's are considered sports cars.

BTW, my parents just boguht a '98 GXE, thanks to my relentless *****ing. And to think they were gonna buy a 4 cyl. Accord because they wanted a 5 speed. Hehehe...

yeah... if i were you, i'd go for a max cause of the extra insurance cost of anything with 2 doors. plus, i believe the maxs are faster. happy hunting!

I think Maxima would have higher insurance because of it's bigger displacement engine. V6 compared to a 4cyl.

And in Toronto, insurance is a *****!

Insurance is lower on 4 door cars compared to "sporty" 2 doors. I wanted to get a 300zx but the insurance would have killed along with the price of it and for gas. I got the max instead, insurance is lower i guess, but I get bad gas mileage with it.

I had a '91 240SX LE and I also live in Ontario. I can tell you that the 240 is a real fun car in the dry, and a whole DIFFERENT kind of fun in the snow - you know - the heart-racing, white knuckles, near-death-experience kind of fun. Combination of light weight, low ground clearance and rear wheel drive is, to say the least, not ideal for year round use in our neighborhood. And whoever told you the back seat of a 240 was roomy was seriously yanking your chain - kids only.

Cheers,

Jaeger

PS - it's still the best-handling car I ever owned.

since we're talking about 240SX's

my roommate has one and it has the HICAS steering system, just like a 300ZX Turbo. He says this is a euro spec model...does anyone know if this is right or not?

You cant get a "euro-spec" anything in the US. At least not without jumping through lots of EPA hoops.

If he's just talking about the HICAS option, thats bs. It was offered on US cars.
