engine light..little pain in the a**

today i received a message from my car. the check engine light came on.. so i got under the seat and did the self-check. it stated the problem is 0707. i looked around and web sites say it means rear heated 02 sensor.(or rear 02 sensor) what does that mean?? also if i reset the light will the light come back on if the problem persists??? thank you...

Yes,
If the rear oxygen (O2) sensor is busted, the check engine light will return after you reset it (cause the problem still exists - so the ecu will tell you about it).
The rear O2 sensor on my 96 is located on the rear portion of the catalytic converter.
O2 sensors tell the engine if you are running rich or lean.
The rear will also provide indication of the health of your catalytic converter.
O2 sensors cost about $100.

I guess this is a common problem for people with a RT Cat ( something about the cat element being closer to the sensor thus changing exhaust properties when it gets to the sensor ).

RT cat shouldn't kick out the error code

I don't think putting in a properly functioning catalytic should trigger this error. Mine didn't (still doesn't). Like vbxmaxima stated...it compares the values between the signals before vs. after the cat... if all is working as it should... the signals should be different obviously. [/I]

I know its the cat...because putting the stock one on solves the problem.
I haven't had my emissions tested since I got the car...I will when I get inspected in March.

The check engine light code encompasses both the unit and its associated wires/cables/connectors.
Just last week my light came on.
Said it was the engine coolant temperature sensor.
-Long story short: the connector had just gone loose. Didn't need a new sensor.
BTW AWESOME engine compartment you got there, wicked!

By the way Wicked,
In case you wanted to see where the rear O2 sensor is at,
(at least for a 4th gen) look here:
http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/shifter.html
In step 7, you can see the O2 sensor between the green and red arrows, along with the wires leading to it.
Good Luck!

Now here's some GOOD news. After buying my '96 Max used, I did some research on dealer recalls and the only one of any significance was a campaign to replace (all 3?) oxygen sensors w/ improved ones, (regardless of mileage?) AT ABSOLUTELY NO COST. My "check engine light" never came on, but the dealer service rep said it was just a matter of time. Any Nissan dealer will do the service. CALL THE NEAREST NISSAN DEALER ASAP! About a month after the service was done, I got a letter in the mail mentioning the recall and asking me to bring the car in, but don't count on being contacted by Nissan.
