acceleration lag

I have a 97 5sp and in the ast few days I noticed a problem with my acceleration. Everytime I go to press the gas, The revolution jump up from 3k to 5500 then drop down again to 3k revs and starts accelerating again. The lag is very noticable. I've made sure that my clutch is all the way out also before accelerating. This problm is very bothersome, and any help is appreciated.

today i noticed that there is a lot of slag on my throttle cable, could that be my problem? And the clutch smelled really bad, I guess from the stress it was getting. If it is the clutch, how much would one cost? A cheap one for now.
