When I installed my Y pipe ~ 2 years ago I put in a new gasket between the Cat and Y. My Cat has been off a couple of times since then for various projects. Last time I took it off I put some exhaust sealant (something with copper in it) on both sides of the gasket before I put it together. This time I put it together without the sealant and now my exhaust is leaking between the cat and Y-pipe. The Gasket is looking pretty beat.

Will putting more sealant around the gasket fix the problem or should I just get a new gasket? If I get a new gasket can I buy one at an auto parts store or do I have to go to the dealer? Is the Dealer going to rip me off on one of these? (Trick question, my local dealer rips me off on everything )

 

Just get a new gasket I'm pretty sure they're relatively cheap.

If you plan on taking the cat/Y juncture apart periodically, I think the gasket sealant only makes things worse. Personally, I have had no problems with the OEM gasket which is some 3-4 layers of thin metal. When it appears to be rusted, I would swap it out. As was said, it is cheap and the dealer usually has this item in stock.

 

leave it alone when you put the new one on.

 

And buy spares!
