new personal best mpg

the past couple of years or so i've been getting crappy gas mileage... 19/20 city and 25/27 highway. well, this weekend my girlfriend and i took a trip to the mountains. so about 120miles into the trip i decided to top off my tank again. it only took 3.?? gallons (can't remember), but it equated to 37.5 mpg. i was in total disbelief, so i drove another 100 or so miles and got 35 mpg... that was going uphill most of the way. and this was going 75-85mph. i haven't filled up since i got back, but i drove about 280 miles on a half tank. but that included some 100+ runs with an SS camaro(in the twisties) and a 2.8 audi... so it probably won't be as good. but the only thing i've changed since my last trip was a new midpipe, a Bpipe, and some new tires... dunlop sport 5000's (in place of kuhmo ecsta's). so has anyone else reached ~37.5mpg before?

I went 81 miles on 2.0X gallons once. 40.5 mpg
That was in 5th gear with cruise on at 55 mph most of the time.

Honestly, I don't think that's possible.

I believe the difference in the amount of fuel has been skewed by the "topping off" method. To reduce the amount of error introduced by topping off inconsistencies between fill-ups, you should run the tank near empty each time. The average and total miles per fill-up will be more consistent.

Maybe it could happen, but I'm skeptical.

I got a new personal WORST, I was at 1/8 tank and was not even at 250 miles. I have an exhaust leak so I guess it is time to buy some JB weld for a temp fix until I can afford a Y-pipe. It is also not a good idea to run you're tank all the time until the gas light comes on, sediment at the bottom of the tank can possibly foul the fuel system and shorten the life of the fuel filter, injectors, among other things.

shat up! i got 525 miles on a tank of gas once on a trip, just because he didn't go w/ his car for a long trip at that constant speed doesn't mean he couldn't have and i know especially w/ a full exhaust and intake, those mods help GREATLY w/ fuel economy... and what does he get from lying here? no bs here

that is all...

That's excellent and good to hear. If you take the same trip, try going 200 miles before topping off and check the results. Valid results are always repeatable. If the distance is too short, 0.4 to 0.6 gal variations (where the pump stops and how much more you top off) can throw the calculation off. I did 26.5 going from South Jersey to NYC back to S Jersey, which at first disappointed me. But I was stuck in stop-go traffic in Manhattan for quite a bit--so who knows, maybe I coulda done 28-30. My personal best was over 32 mpg, but the car had about 10k miles back then and it seemed easier to get good mileage.

A few weeks ago I drove up to minnesota from Iowa with 3 other guys in the car and about 100 lbs of speakers in the trunk. I filled up before I left and after I got back (450 miles). I ended up getting 29.5 mpg. I was impressed considering how many people were in the car. Lately I've been getting 23-25 city which is a lot better than my 3rd gen got.

well, i did do this twice... once getting 37 mpg and the other 35mpg. and i filled up today after going 289 miles from my return trip and i got 31.6 mpg. but this was offset because of several miles of high speeds. i believe the 31.6 could have been better if i had not run into the audi and the SS. but for you that are in disbelief, oh well. i know what i saw. but honestly i'm amazed by the numbers, but i'm sure they are correct.

I'm usually at about 200 HWY miles by 1/2-tank, but I fill up at 340-360miles and end up in the 23.xxmpg range.

I've done 42 MPG before in my old camry... but I tailgated Mack trucks for 150 miles... makes a huge difference in MPG, but also makes a huge difference in NPC (Number of Paint Chips)

I believe this is very possible. City driving and by the time the needle reaches the first quarter mark, i'm usually at 100 miles. On highway and by the time the needle reaches the first quartermark, i'm usually around 125. BUT on several occasions I did get 155 too and at this rate, the fuel gauge is NOT halfway yet by 300 miles. I only get this of a good MPG on chevron fuel. And Exxon IS NOT SAME as Mobil. Mobil is better.

Well, the best I ever get is about 30MPG. And I get this on a trip that is about half 55MPH and half 65MPH zones. So that means that I'm driving 65-75 on the round trip. It is almost all flat land with very little traffic. In the way of mods that might have an affect on this mileage, I use slick 50 and have a K&N stock size air filter installed. I recently checked my mileage on a couple of long trips. I had added 17" tires, rims, aero kit, fstb...etc and wondered if it affected me negatively. I got 26-27MPG on both trips with the AC going and most of the driving being done at 75mph...mixed with a little city driving. All of these results come from cheap discount premium grade fuel.

ok how is this. 260 miles on half a tank. the total miles driven was 370 and had about 2 gals left.. so eastimate 2 gal = 40 miles that is 410 miles and granny shifting, this is a total drastic change in mpg vs my old maxima which was a vg engine 160 hp, the new total mileage was in my new 5spd ve 190 hp engine 3rd gen. drastic changes, that is also including 1 1/2 hour slow craw driving in the pouring rain for the ne meet 6-14-03 stuck on the bqe, lie for alot of time. and also some high speed runs, so i estimate if i had not stayed in heavey crawling traffic and no high speed runs, i would have goten like 440 miles to the tank. this maxima is a 1993 5spd with 117k on it. not bad huh?

My personal best with all city driving has been 25ish mpg. I was at the 340 or 350 mile mark.
