How do I make an OBD-2 plug?
I've heard you can make a OBD-2 to Serial plug for use with this guy's free software OBD-2 Scan Software with some radio shack parts. Anyone know where I can find a schematic for that? Can't be too hard, just matching wires, but I don't know which wires. Thanks.

You can buy the plug pretty easily. I've found a few sites on the net before, the problem is the ISO 9141 to rs232 protocol conversion. You need a special chip for that, and I don't think Radio Shack can order it let alone carry it in their store. There is a guy with a $60 kit of everything you need. That's as cheap as I could find, good luck.

First, the software is not free. That's a demo and the only thing it will do is VIEW scans already taken. You must buy the FULL version to scan/log.
Second, you need a convertor, which you can't find in any stores. He's selling a do it your self kit that you put together for a whole $12 savings.
Third, you can buy just the connector/cable, but without the convertor it's worthless.

But I see now after doing some more reading on other sights that it's not just a patch cord, but a protocol converter that you need, hence the price tag. So maybe I won't be making one of these for myself.

You can VIEW stored scans, but you can NOT take new scans EVEN with the convertor. I lost my code, I was SOL.
