SMC STS Problems
#1
Greetings,
I have bought a SMC STS as part of the Group Deal back in the sumer/fall of las year. I have noticed that several fellow maxima owners have reported a problem with the SMCs being hard to shift at the begining and becoming lose (way lose) later, this is my case. I have noticed that the inside metal bushing (a barrel looking thing) of the shifter is short and sits inside of the pivot (the part that connects to the fork of the cross bar). This makes the assembly compress the sides of the fork onto the pivot preventing it from moving freely.
In the stock maxima design, this barrel is longer and protrudes from the pivot body in both sides by a small amount (millimeters) enough to allow free movement of the pivot while tightening the assembly very well.
The problem with the shorter barrel is that it will eventually force the wear off the fork (holes for the nut and bold and walls of the fork) and make it unrecoverably lose.
I wonder if I received the shifter for a maxima and barrel for another car (say a sentra or a 240?). Have any of you guys being given a similar mismatched set?. I have contacted Importpartsplus.com for info and I am yet to hear from them.
Please let me know.

huh.
when i first installed my STS, 4 monthes later the shifting sucked, and was very stiff. when i removed the unit, i noticed the mini screw inside the pivot ball was loose. so i readjusted the ball, and tightened pretty hard, but making sure the ball, pin, shaft (huhuh) was throughly cleaned with soap, water, Simple Green, and dried. then i re-screwed the pivot ball into place and put the pin in at the highest fulcrum point. Then using white grease, i made that ball hella slippery and replaced it back into the car, and ever since, the shifts have been pretty smooth.
as for having the sts irreversably loose, i just think you might need to retorque your bolts or use some kind of bolt tighter.. :P
