Exhaust wrap?

I want to wrap my Y-pipe(S/S), what would be the best stuff to use?
I think the stock header is cast should I wrap it also?

Any header wrap could be used. I believe that there is a write-up on www.motorvate.ca on wrapping the Y-Pipe. The header would be hard to wrap unless you took it off the engine and wrapped it.

Header wrap promotes rust. Works but speeds the rusting process

i bought some 1" wrap in the smallest length from summit racing. i believe the company was DEI. if i was going to do it over again, i would use the same product except in 2" since its easier to use.

I was thinking of ordering DEI (2"X50') and the spray coating. I'm still wondering if I should wrap my cast exhaust header also?

in my opinion, i wouldnt spend the time doing it. if you got some time on your hands and just feel like doing it then go for it but i dont think it would reduce underhood temps enough to make a noticeable difference but i could be wrong.

i don't think they are doing it reduce underhood temps. they are doing it to increase the temp of the exhaust system...hotter..the exhaust gas will travel out faster.

here is my thread on wrapping the ypipe. I did it to make EGT more stable. make sure you wear gloves, long sleeves, pants and masks. dont do it inside your garage....those fiber glass makes me felt that I just smoked a pack of cigs.

honestly, will it keep much heat in the exhaust? i've contemplated doing the exhaust wrap numerous times, but figured it really wouldnt keep much heat in. maybe if i did the entire exhaust system, from manifold to muffler, cause i'm sure lots of heat is lost going to the muffler, but will slightly hotter temps make a hp gain?

Also helps hide those "bees in the can" sounds from the Y-Pipe, if you have them.

That's why I did mine.

Does wrapping the entire y-pipe, b-pipe and rear section up to the muffler reduce exhaust sound level at all? I'm starting a new job in a month and really would like to be a little quieter but I don't want to loose any performance...

i only have my y pipe wrapped but it really reduced the bees in the can sound that was more prevalent in hotter temperatures. if youve got a free flow muffler then i doubt the wrapping will help with sound that much that someone would actually notice.

Thanks...I don't have the bees in the can sound so I guess I'll leave me set up the way it is.

Yeah you guys ever remove the wrapping after its been on for a year or so? I had a cattman stainless non the less and it looked like crap after I took it off. I wouldnt waste the time money or effort. Probbly ok for the Florida guys but around here it snows and theres salt all over the roads.

i took mine off after about 2 months and it was pretty nasty even in north carolina where it hardly ever snows. it just helps with sound so much when its hot outside and i guess the exhaust expands and air is less dense.

Let me bud in here. I'm the guy from motorvate.ca and here is what I found out:
(1) It does make the typical y-pipe hiss much quieter
(2) I don't think it makes much of a difference to under hood temps
(3) The exhaust is much hotter at the muffler than without the wrap
(4) Why would it rust? There is so much heat there, that any moisture is gone after the engine warms up. After one of the most coldest Canadian winters (lots of salt) it looks good.

My Summary:
If Nissan insulates the factory y-pipe, so will I.

-Frank.
