Compression Test pricing

I was just quoted $72.00 for a compression test. How much SHOULD I be paying?

You should be paying $20-$30 for a compression testing kit and doing it yourself If you can change plugs you can do a compression test.

Or find someone that has one and borrow it. I've lent mine out to just about every maxima guy in the area.

what stores can we get this compression test kit from? And what results are we supposed to see for a good/bad/horrible compression?

EL Autozone, Poop Boys, etc.

180psi is ideal

150 or less is not good.

Thank you all for the quick replies!! My oil light keeps flickering on and off and my car isn't leaking oil or blowing smoke out. I figure it has to be the pressure...

maybe not the pressure, but the sender... it's often the problem. take a looksee at that first. compression test really won't tell you much about oil pressure anyway.

Change your oil pressure sensor. It's down by the oil filter, they often leak or go bad. Thats [/i]hopefully[/i] why your light is flickering.

Hummm..... have you checked the oil level lately?

Actually that was it!!! I was so relieved when the mechanic was telling me that it wasn't a serious leak. I've been praying to find an honest person to work on my car where I live, my prayers were answered!!!!

Was this the same mechanic that was going to charge you $72 for a compression test? Maybe for te $72 it also would have included a cylinder leak down lest.
