service engine lamp = $$$

I followed all the info on the web and could not fix the problem--EVAP canister vent control closed. Resetting the lamp is easy, dismantling and cleaning the EVAP easy, but getting the lamp to stay off and have the motor run properly, that's the part that's not easy.
Mine came on at 77k or so, and it finally cost $430 to fix at the dealer. The parts were not cheap, there was a sensor over $100.

While this problem was not addressed, what I noticed was the car would not start on the first try when the motor was warm and the temp outside over 90. Also, during serious acceleration, the car would buck each upshift.

So 2 lessons learned--fooling the computer and getting the lamp off isn't the best way to do things, eventually this part in question is gonna fail, be it 50k or 100k. If its failing, replacement will restore the original performance, so what do you save when you clean out the part just to get the lamp off? 2nd, for any used 4th gen buyer, check for a maintenance record that this service was performed. Why shell-out $400+ right off the bat?
