ever since i got my car i have been getting 240-280 miles per tank depending on how hard i drive. Sometimes all city, sometimes half and half...sometimes even all highway. I never get past 280ish. Even after changing fuel filter my miles still doesnt go past 280. I normally get 50 miles in before touching the Full line and then i get disappointed from then on (if i drive like a grand pepe)....

I just changed my 02 sensor (front heated)(as some of u may know) and i wasnt quite sure about my miles going up but i put a full tank of gas in yesterday and have consistently been driving hard, i mean shifting between 3.5 and 6 every gear depending on gear and who i'm racing. I normally get 50 miles before touching the F line when driving like a baby. Now i'm at 55 miles DRIVING REAL AGGRESSSIVE and i havent even touched the line yet!!! This so far shows that i am getting better gas mileage and i was too happy to wait for the tank to finish! WOOT

anyone else happy wit gas mileage?

yes, very happy. I get about 400 per tank and have fun doing it.

i get about 400 a tank too... i keep track of it every week. If it goes under 370, then i kno somethin is wrong (unless i've been really really driving aggressively)

i never floor it but i do wait till i get to high rpm's before i shifted...

what do u guys think is worst? shifting at high rpm's (5-6)or flooring it till u get to (3-5)

50/50 gives me around 320ish, mostly hwy gives me about 360ish. i guess it's alrite...

maintance history:
- change front O2 + knock 9 months ago
- oil change + filter change every 2,900 (DIY sty-o)
- 91 octane all time
- TB cleaned about 1 month ago

milage also improved throughout every new performance mods, which is also a plus rite there.

Used to get 280-310 miles for like 70% city, but now the tranny is rebuilt so hopefully it'll go up. I drive fast and floor it a lot

I'll replace the O2 sensors later on since the car has 96k and the O2 sensors are getting worn out. I need a new exhaust too and I know that'll increase the MPG

Again, I'm lost. Like you, I'm thinking WTF, a "tank" is the way that people on the forum calculate mpg? And we wonder why our education system is failing? That's sounds like an eyeball unless you routinely run the vehicle out of fuel before adding petrol.

mpg is not rocket-science, take the miles driven and divide it by the fuel consumed. There are lots of IQ tests on the web, perhaps there should be a big fat link to them at the top of the discussion. Be scary to see the results.

i would go with flooring it as being worse.


well the way i do it is i would fill up and then drive until the low gas light goes on. then drive some more around the area and pull up in the station on fumes, hit the 'B' trip computer and see how many miles i got...

personally i don't use the AC at all so that helps, especially in city traffic...

thats exactly what i do too. You can divide to get miles per gallon but why go for extra calculation when everyone can easily look at their odomoter and tell how much miles they gained through a hole tank of gas. IMO saying how much miles u gained through a tank of gas is the same as saying how many miles u get per gallon. miles per tank is as inaccurate as miles per gallon because no one drives till their empty.

I get 280 all chicago city traffic. On the highway I get, I don't know how much. All I know is that I can put about 120 on the odo before the needle even moves on a full tank...

i got 26.8mpg on my last tank at about 70% highway driving. during the winter when i was driving to school which was 10 min away, i had a fill up where i was only getting 17.3mpg. not warming the car up and the diff gas they give us in the winter sure does make a difference.

375-425 per tank. I occasionally have some fun while driving, and put ricers to shame at every opportunity. Unless they're turbo'd.

about 24mpg under normal (read: agressive driving), and i got 270-ish miles to a half a tank doing 80-ish on the freeway for 3 or so hours...not bad...

I too question how people come up with some of these numbers. In order to get reliable data you must fill the tank COMPLETELY, consume some fuel, track the miles traveled, then fill the tank completely. Simply divide miles by gallons put in the tank and you've got MPG. It doesn't matter if you use 1 gallon or 15 gallons, it works out the same. Using the car computer doesn't work because those devices are always off by a long shot especially the Nissan verisons.

Right now I'm getting about 23mpg of 80% city 20% highway in 100 degree temps and AC full blast. I consider that fairly decent because I reguarly romp the throttle above 5000rpms in 2nd and 3rd plus my 17s have much higher rolling resistance and the high temps cause the gas to vaporize when sitting in the heat while I'm at work.

What do you mean "how they come up with some of these numbers"? By having the trip odo start at zero and driving until I refill the tank.

I do calculate mileage by hand. I do not rely on the car's mileage calculator. I let it get to about 2 gallons left then refill it. I get about 380 MILES doing that...hence the MILES PER TANK reference. It's kind of assumed if you are talking MILES PER TANK that you're driving the car down to about the same amount of gas left, and 2 gallons fits that bill for me.

If someone posts a question about MILES PER TANK it's polite to answer their question using MILES PER TANK. If he asked about MILES PER GALLON I would have replied using MILES PER GALLON.

I can only see 2 or 3 people in this thread who need that IQ test that was posted earlier.

My 99 5spd mileage:

My commute used to be 50% hwy and 50% city (clogged hwy) and I got around 24-26 mpg and that was with pretty aggressive driving. Not bad considering my driving style and conditions.

Now my commute and driving is 100% city for the most part and it's down in the 22-23 mpg range, but now I drive like a granny (shift 5spd at around 3k most of the time, only occasional spurts above that to pass morons). Still pretty decent.

This past weekend I made a long-range trip of about 800 miles total, 100% of which was highway. I averaged 30.6 mpg on the way down, and 28.6 mpg on the way back up for an average of 29.6 mpg. Not bad considering a 99 5spd is only rated at 27 mpg highway. I was taking it easy and just cruising at 70-75 mph most of the time. Left it in 5th, even to pass people, and only once did I drop it down to 3rd to lay some smack down (on some idiot woman in an SUV throwing her weight around). When I got back I had 420 miles on the tank since the last fillup and it still had a 1/4 to go. I had the tires cranked up to 36 psi for the long trip, so that helped a little too. Just had car washed, oil changed, and the air filter is still clean also.


If your mileage sucks, and I mean really sucks, particularly 4th gen's, either you drive like a complete maniac, or there is something wrong with your car. Even driving pretty hard in a lot of city traffic before, I still always got in the 24-26 mpg range. If you're below 20 mpg on a 4th Gen your knock sensor or some other sensor is probably blown and might not necessarily throw an SES light depending on what it is. 4th Gens blow knock sensors all the time and that doesn't throw an SES light. Mine is blown, but it's bypassed. My mileage would suck right now in city driving without the bypass resistor. Probably teens at best.

get about 375-425.... depends on how hard i push it on 93 octane. Most i ever gotton was like 460ish. That was sweet, but had like .2 gallons left in reserve.

I am supercharged and very happy with the gas mileage, specially when I travel almost 400Miles to a full tank of gas, 300 plus in the city with traffic

mecca how many gallons do u typically fill up at 280 miles? thats what u gotta look at, on a recent trip to montreal i averaged about 80 - 85 mph and got 29 mpg, and city i usually get anywhere from 21-26 mpg

okay and miles per tank can be different for everyone because we all know the fuel guage is off, so me filling up at the gas light only comes to about 14 gallons, for u it may come to 16, so this is the most inaccurate way of judging fuel economy, because u can't even calculate out the rest of ur tank, point is MILES PER TANK CAN'T be determined because ur not running the tank completely empty, and we're not all going to fill up with the same amount of fuel used, are we? dont get mad im just stating my opinion

i always measure by filling all the way to the top, full tank...only way....

and this is bullsh*t!!! i just got 265 miles when the orange light came on and went back off...WTF, i expected so much more...car ran better and i was doing a lot of hard driving but i expected a good 300 with the harsh driving...grrrrr mUST I CHANGE EVERY 02 sensor?!

I get about 30 mpg if I drive an average speed of 65 for the whole tank. Oh and I use Royal Purple now, and my milage went up another 2 mpg.

For those of you that are getting bad mileage dispite a decent tuned engine, check your tire pressures. If the fronts are in the high 20psi range or lower, you might benefit from going to 33psi-ish fronts and 28-30psi-ish rears.
