egr valve cleaning can I do that.

I got a 400 code for egr valve malfunction. I need to get my emissions done soon. So you think a simple cleaning of the valve would help...and if so what should I use to clean it? Will carb cleaner work. Thanks

Carb is no good on EFI cars. I would also like to clean my EGR system for maintenance.

Carb cleaner will work, but DO NOT spray it inside the valve. The Haynes manual warns against that because of the rubber diaphragm that will be damaged by harsh chemicals. You can use small tools to scrape the carbon buildup from the orifices. Just watch that diaphragm or you'll need to buy a new one. I did mine awhile back. It was carboned up, but I didn't notice much of a difference from cleaning it. It is real fun to get on and off, too. Remove all of your intake/TB/strut tower brace stuff for easier access.

I cleaned mine on my VE and it made a huge difference on my NOx levels for emissions testing.
I just used throttle body cleaner since it's not as harsh as carb cleaner
