Advance or retard timing

For what reasons would you advance or retard timing on your car?

Retard if you have a lot of boost or nitrous to keep teh cylinder temp down. However if you are NA you would advance the timing to create extra horsepower.

i advanced my timing from 14 to 17 btdc and i noticed a bump in low end response and a little better gas mileage. it was explained to me advancing when you are NA will allow the motor to operate more efficently. i believe it does gain some in higher rpms but its so small that it is hard to be felt.

How did you advance your timing?? Only way you could do that is with an aftermarket chip or stand-alone engine management system.

What if you are just mostly stock and looking for any little extra "umph" wherever you can get it? would it be benificial to me also to advance timing?

5th gens are done only through consult 2 diagnostic machine. nissan dealers use it exclusively but ive got a local nissan specific shop that purchased it from nissan and they allowed me at least one other member to use the consult ourselves and set the timing. even if you are stock, you should be able to feel a small bump in lower rpms. dont be expecting a night and day difference, its subtle but its there. if you know someone at the dealer then they might be able to set you up but otherwise people have jumped through hoops with no results from trying to get their service advisor to do it.

I heard that once the consult 2 gets disconnected from the ecu, the ecu overrides the new timing and goes back to stock.

if this is true....it sucks... i paid $50 to get my timing advanced... and it's back to normal it blows.....

not true. i actually unplugged my battery for 10hrs overnight and had the shop check it again the day following. it read 17. ive got obd-2 software that i run off my laptop which one of the parameters is timing and it shows it at 17 still. the only time it was less was in 90 degree heat when the ecu retarded it because of the temp.

You are mistaken. JWT and G-Force ECUs advance timing.

That's suck for us 4th gen specially for 97-99 year model. Does anybody good news for the 97-99 model?

I think the 99 can have there timming advanced. The ecu in the 99 is similar to the 2000+. I remember having a service tech check my codes and they had to us the newer type for the 5th gens. The 95-98 consult didn't work.

thats true as well. the tech that was watching me use the consult 2 said he had a friend with a 99 and they used the 2 for all diagnostic info so it should be able to take the timing advance as well.
