Wheel Damage - Be Prepared to Cry

Wednesday, I let a colleague who was in town, take my car down the street to get something and come right back. When he came back, the two passenger side SSR Type-C's had been curbed around the entire lip, the front wheel has three cracks in the lip and several deep gashes in the spokes. The front wheel is clearly warped as well. He evidently took a fast left turn on a slow curve and hit a rough spot on the road causing him to slide into the curb where the wheels clearly did at least one full rotation while they were pressed against the curb. He must have hit pretty hard to crack the lip like that. The tires are undamaged as far as I can tell but the wheels need to be realigned for sure. He must have been moving to lose control like this...my car doesn't slide or lose grip on a turn without some effort.

Argh. It is SO depressing...you would have trouble looking away though...the damage is ridiculous. F'ing $500 wheels that look like somebody took a steel brush to it. I will take some photos after I take the wheels off.

Well, two new SSR Type-C's are on their way from Tire Rack as I type.

He's never touching my car again...I'm not sure I'll even let him sit in the passenger seat. Just depressing. He wrote me a check yesterday.

I haven't taken any photos yet...have to head out of town for a couple weeks (which is good....when I get back I can pop the new wheels right on since they will have arrived). I'll see if I can get a couple photos up before I leave Sunday.

well thats good. He at least deserves credit for paying right away. Ive seen many times so called "friends" avoiding paying for damages.

he seems like a good friend, alittle dumb maybe.
sorry about the wheels.

Did he tell you about the "incident" or did he let you discover it yourself?

I agree with the statement, NOBODY treats your stuff like you. To bad you trusted him and got a headache in return.

Ouuuch! Those are some pricy wheels and having them happen something like this to them is really a cringe. Colonel is right. NOBODY treats your stuff like you do. If I had my way, I'll be mounting and balancing all my wheels. And do all the work... I just don't have skills and tools.

I had a bad experience with tire mounting/balancing....

Oh, no...he told me immediately and wrote me a check the next day. He would have written me a check immediately if he had a checkbook on him. This guy is a stand-up guy, just can't drive worth a $hit evidently.

So he has money but doesn't have the respect to not race someone else's car. I would never drive anyone else's car hard that I was borrowing, even if it was a beater!

Those are VERY nice rims. Those are what I've had planned for my car for some time. I like the 6 spoke look and their light as hell. I hope I can find'em in gunmetal.

Back to topic have you checked to make sure there is no other damage? It's easy to bend things when the wheels get smacked like that. Like the sway bar, A frames, the rack, front axel... the list goes on and on. I smaked a curb with my 99 and the total damages came to over $2k. What I'm getting at is the rims may be the lease of your worries. I'd get it looked at ASAP in case you need to file a claim. If there needs to be a claim filed you could also have the ins co pay for the rims too and pocket the grand from the other guy.

So, finally got back into town and had a chance to focus on this. Replaced both passenger side wheels and checked out other damage. The alignment was SERIOUSLY f'd up. 1.6" and 1.8" in opposite directions on driver and passenger wheels respectively. Steering wheel was about 2" off level as well. Holy $hit is all I could say. No tie rod damage (and I would have bet a quarter that was a sure thing after I found out about the alignment). The front passenger side strut is ever so slightly bent, causing a slight camber offset. I've been driving for a day on the bent strut and it pulls just a bit to the right...don't believe I need to replace it (and neither does the guy who did my alignment), but I'm pretty sure I will as it will irritate the hell out of me if I don't.

The front passenger side rim is in my trunk and I will take a picture of it...what an f'd up rim. Unmounting the tire, cause the lip to completely crack off on one side. Wild stuff...just need to get my camera and the wheel in the same place eventually. I plan to mount the rim on the wall in my office.

Man that sucks, I don't even let my wife drive my car. I tried to teach her once how to drive but that didn't work. Now I don't even bother.
