ok, my site decides to have problems updating so i will post here for anyone interested, sorry no pics but i tried to be as specific as possible.
- First thing you have to do is lower the steering wheel as low as it can go.
- Then you will start removing the guage.
- Remove the two screws up above the guage pod and then slowly apply force to the lower half (the piece where the cruise control, dimmer switch, and factory alarm light are located) this lower half is held in by clips and is kinda frustrating to remove. Apply moderate force but for god's sake, be very careful! You can crack this piece very easily especially in the corner where it is thinnest.
- Disconnect the cruise control wires, the dimmer switch wires, and the factory alarm light. The Cruise Control comes off easily, the dimmer switch is a little tough, look at it from the bottom and you will see you have to depress a tab that is very tough to depress. The alarm light comes off by popping it out, the whole tab (square) that it is attached to is popped outward and then the light as well as the square, is turned to fit through the hole it came from.
- After this is done, you can place this piece aside. You will see the guage held in by three screws, one on top and two on either side at the bottom.
- unscrew these screws
- Pull out the guage, but don't yank it out, it is attached by a bunch of wires in the back. Pull it out enough to be able to start taking the guage apart so you can slip on the Initial k Guage.
Slipping on the Guages.
- Now that you have the guages out enough to work with them, you have to be careful.
- To get to the guages you have to separate the black section (which includes the clear top section) from the white section the guages are attached to.
- To get the black section off, you will have to depress a bunch of clips that come out from the black section that go into the white section. there are four on top and i believe four on the bottom (two on each side.) I'm not sure about the bottom, there may be only two, but all the clips are in plain view, and none of these are hidden.
- once the black piece is off the guages will be exposed.
FIRST, the needles are not to be removed. you can manuever the needles around and they will work normally once the car is started again. The only way you would have to reset the needles would be if you took them off. As long as they are not removed and not twisted all the way around several times, it will stay the same as before you touched them.
- The two middle guages have two small white screws in the middle, remove these.
- Take the Initial K Guage that you will be placing over the factory guage and slip it under the needle. It should slip slightly under the needle and then over the black cap holding the needle in.
- Place the guage correctly if not perfectly centered, and then put the two screws that were removed previously back in, but not too tight, you can damage the guages. repeat for the other middle guage.
- The two smaller guages on the outer portion are put in the same way except that they are held in by only one screw.
- Since there is one screw holding this guage in, make sure it stays aligned when screwing that screw in.
- At this point you have to find a place to thread the wires coming from the Initial K Guages. I didn't want to look for a place to thread the wires through, so I just cut a notch on either side of the white section. I cut a notch right on the lip of the white part, and when the black part was placed back in, there was a snug but not too tight fit.
WIRING
- At this point find a place in the well the guage came out of. there is some room back there so find a spot and secure the box any way you can.
- Now we start wiring.
- The ground coming from the box for the Initial K Guages is black and can be attached to any ground wire, or to the ground screw in back of the guage cluster itself, it is a screw the says GRD.
- The positive wire coming from the Initial k Guage box is red and should be attached to the positive cruise control wire which is also red.
- Look at the Cruise Control wire bundle you disconnected before. It has TWO red wires. the wire you will connect the Initial K Positive wire to, is the Red Wire with a Blue stripe on it, it will alsio have silver dots on it.
Thats it, you are done. Check to see if they work before putting everything back in. It's kinda hard to do during the day, but I was lucky enough to finish the install right when it got dark.
- Zip tie loose wires
- Use electrical tape to cover connections
- Try to tame the wires so that when you put the guage back in, it will fit nicely without too much hassle.
- Put everything back in, but remember that you have to find a place to put the switch. I was lucky enough to get a digital controller, so all I had to decide was where to stick it. Analog controllers have a switch and should be the same install, but in my opinion won't come out as clean looking as the digital controller.
- Make sure the Cruise Control, Dimmer Switch, and Alarm light are put back in correctly.
- Wait until its dark and notice how nice they are, definitely worth the wait.
hope this helps, i only wish i had pics, my how 2 would definitely be alot more helpful with them. anyone want to donate a digital camera to me? hehe....
