Let me preface this by saying I tried the search function before posting. It is kinda slow/cumbersome but mostly I couldn't find anything on point.

I have a 95 SE and upon starting it there is a LOUD screech that lasts for just a second or two before the engine turns over, then the noise is also gone.

Is this a starter issue, and if it is, how long can I keep driving with the problem since law school is taking all of my 'play' money?

Thanks for any help...

How old is your car? It may be that one of your belts is loose. Since I can't hear the sound myself, I'm taking a guess. Check all your belts and make sure the tension is right. Also, make sure you're not overdue on any tune-ups. HTH

Belts

I may be wrong in my description but I think it may be more of a grinding screech. I'll check for lose belts though.

Ah, the old starter not releasing fast enough sound. Sounds kind of like griIIirrr. Very common on the Maxima. As long as your car starts consistently and its pretty cold outside, I wouldn't worry too much. The sond should go away in warm weather and when the engine is warm.
