Is the dealership trying to screw me?

Lately the car has had a little bit of trouble starting, nothing more than having to crank for maybe 2 seconds or so before it turns over. However, today (after not driving the car for about 3 days) it didn't want to start, it took me a few tries. So I take it into the Infiniti dealership, they say that it threw them codes for the crank sensor position and that the only fix was to have the transmissioin pulled and sand the transmission case along with adding supplemental grounds. I have never heard of something like this before, has anyone else ever had to have this done? or is the dealership just trying to make me use a cannon to kill a fly.

That makes little sense. It looks like they want to try to reposition the sensor. But if the casting was wrong, then the car shouldn't have functioned correctly from the get go. I would maybe just replace the crank position sensor and see if that does it.

The only think I can think if is the magnets or whatever on the flywheel are not on right. That would require the removal of the tranny to access the flywheel. But I sorta doubt it. Unless you have a rear main seal leak and it's throwing oil all over the flywheel sensors.

the guy told me something like: when that crank position sensor code goes off it means that there's some problem with the grounding. Going to this extreme sounds kinda sketchy to me, but then again i'm still wondering why my car was having such trouble starting this morning (other than that it had just been sitting for a few days).

I appreciate the help, but isn't that describing the camshaft position sensor not the crank position sensor?

4-gen sensor. It's just semantics. 4-gen uses a sensor near the crank. It tells the ecu where the crank position is. But since the crank is attached to the cams via a chain, they are inter related. The ecu can use either the cam position or crank position to run the car. I don't know which it uses

It's a shame the level of expertise is so low. All the problems you see on the forum seem to be in common, it doesn't take hoisting motors out etc. to find the issues. There is more technology in a 599cc Kawasaki than a VQ30, why are they making a starting problem so complicated? When I had the EVAP problem, the car NEVER started properly as long as I left it uncorrected. Nobody went looking at crank sensors pulling transaxles. To tell you the truth, imho this dealership doesn't know what is wrong so they are guessing in a way that will book them labor hours. Good luck nonetheless, try someone else.
