Maxima + Kayak... any problems encountered? Pictures?

I want to get a kayak or 2 in the spring. Currently, the plan is to just buy some foam blocks and put those on the roof under the kayak. Then tighten a few tie-down straps over it. I have considered a roof rack but they require drilling into the roof don't they?
I'd like to see some pictures of Maximas with kayaks, and please share any problems/difficulties that you ran into.

To the best of my knowledge you will not need to drill any holes in your roof. The racks "feet" attach in the door channels, then you put appropriate holders on the bar for the kayak. Also they sell special tiedowns for the kayaks, just a FYI better keep it tight up top!

No the thule racks do not require drilling and was the best $ I spent when I had my 99 max. I sold the rack afterwards since I bought a grand cherokee but got rid of that and now have my 2k2. If I decide to keep my max I will get another one, all depends on where I go to school this fall. Get the thule rack with the fairing and attachments and you will be happy

Yakima also makes some great roof racks. They're more common and easier to get parts for than the Thule. Both systems are wonderful and neither requires drilling. I sell both, and IMO the Yakima is a better choice. It's a little less expensive to switch over to another vehicle (generally), and you get a little more selection with attachments.

How much does a roof rack cost? Is it hard to install? What kind of attachments are we talking about?

www.yakima.com

You're looking at about $375 for a complete system with a fairing, locks, kayak saddles, etc. It's not hard to install; your dealer should be willing to install it for you or at least give you a hand with it. It could be had for under $300 if you wanted to skip the lock cores and fairing. Outdoor stores and bicycle shops will be your best bet. You've got a choice of almost half a dozen different ways to mount your kayak, ranging from about $60 to $100. You can get gear baskets, boxes, bike mounts, ski mounts, etc. It's extremely flexible.

Nope, nothing wrong with the Thule racks at all. Just giving my opinion.
