Well, I'm driving to school today and I notice that my oil light is on. I also notice that I'm about 500 miles past my scheduled oil change. I pull into a gas station and have them change out my oil but that didn't turn off the light. This was around 12. I just checked the oil now, and there's plenty in there but the light is still on. Any ideas?

96 GXE with about 64k.

I'm scared to drive it now =P

Your oil pump shouldn't fail so soon...

Have you check that the oil pressure sender connection is still connected?... it's under the car near the passenger's side CV boot (IIRC slightly in front and above it...)

Strange as it may sound.. occasionally a blown fuse somewhere else may also trip warning lights... Others on the board may have experiences with these 'quirks'...

I wouldn't drive it until you figure out what it really is just in case the oil pump did fail...

Good luck

Pray for a fuse.

I'm not an expert by any means, but in most cases, when the oil light comes on... it's already too late... the damage has been done.

the oil pressure sender failing. It's probably a $10 part. By now, I would think you would have caused motor damage anyway....

well, i got worried about driving it so i just dropped it off at the dealer. the car runs FINE mind you, so i'm hoping i didn't do any serious engine damage, hopefully it's just the oil pressure sending unit.

i'll let ya know in a few hours when they call.

and tell the dealer that you want it replaced. Then if that doesn't fix it, start exploring other possibilities.

Otherwise, they'll spend needless labor hours drinking coffee and sitting on your hood.....

Funny story...

Your Oil Pressure switch has gone bad like most other 4th Gens , or any Nissan for that matter. The Switch is located near the oil pan. When you have your car on the lift, face towards the front of the car and look at the oil drain plug, off to your left, you will see a wire loom, and two wires that will lead to what looks like a 22mm nut w/ wires going to it. Just replace that and your car will be fine. It's a simple sensor, and you should coat the threads with a hi-temp red silicone available at most part stores, but prefer the Nissan one since it doesn't smell at all. Hopefully this will help, since I've replaced 20-30 oil pressure switches.

I remember the day the oil pressure switch was replaced on my dad's 89 Max.

That day at the mechanic, there were two other Nissans, a Sentra and a Stanza. All three had to have their oil pressure switches replaced that day.......I guess I'll replace mine at the next oil change......in another 10k miles....
