Yes. With a shorter final drive the gear ratios would remain the same. It's just that the maximum speed in each gear would be lower which would prove to be an advantage to people with extended redlines.

actually there are aftermarket gears for the maxima. Someone posted a website a while ago that I remember had a different final drive I believe. I will try to find it. Tires are the easiest way though.

I'm alittle unclear on what you want. Do you want a lower numerically final gear like going from stock 3.82 to a 3.62 or do you want lower speeds reached in each gear. Which would be like going from a 3.82 to a 4.17? In any case the 2nd maxima has the same tranny but with a 3.43 final gear, 3rd gens get 3.62 (VE = VQ). A cheap way of getting the gearing you want is to change tire size. In a 5spd running a tire simular to a 205/50-15 is like going to a 4.1-3 final gear. Given the close ratios of the 5spd there isn't much to be gained unless one revs alot higher than stock. The auto's is a different story, basically the higher the final gear number the better the acceleration is.

I will be reving from 7500-8000rpm, I think alot of time will be gained from lower gearing.

I haven't found that page with the gears yet, but here is an interesting read.

The biggest problem the manual trans guys have is traction and that would be multiplied with lower gears. The benefit you are looking at could turn into a negative.
This does help an automatic tremendously because of the higher gearing but I don't think you will actually realize any benefit.
We need a guy who knows all this stuff like Nealoc to jump in here.
